Chapter 5 - The Reversal of Fortune

With Preston locked away behind bars, the dominoes began to fall upon the rest of the Sterling family. The public outrage generated by the viral Facebook videos had triggered a massive corporate rebellion. The Sterling Development Group’s major institutional investors, including several state pension funds, held an emergency meeting and executed a morality clause to force Richard Sterling out of his own company.
Elena and Richard found themselves trapped inside their suburban mansion, their phones ringing continuously with notifications of cancelled contracts, terminated country club memberships, and foreclosure warnings on their commercial properties.
Vanessa, Preston's bride of less than twenty-four hours, appeared on a national morning talk show, crying beautifully into a silk handkerchief.
"I was completely deceived by the Sterling family," Vanessa sobbed to the interviewer. "I had no idea Preston was an unhinged, violent sociopath. I have already filed for an absolute annulment and am suing Richard Sterling for ten million dollars for intentional misrepresentation and emotional trauma."
Evelyn watched the broadcast from the comfort of her new apartment, which she had rented using her own independent corporate income. Sophie was sitting on the living room rug, her head bandage smaller now, laughing as she built a Lego castle with Dr. Aris.
The doorbell rang. Evelyn opened it to find her mother, Eleanor, standing on the welcome mat. Eleanor looked like a ghost—her expensive designer clothes wrinkled, her hair messy, her eyes rimmed with red.
"Evelyn... please," Eleanor whispered, dropping to her knees right there in the hallway, completely abandoning her thirty years of aristocratic pride. "The banks are repossessing the mansion next week. Your father’s company is bankrupt. Preston is being beaten up by the inmates in the county jail every single day. We have nothing left. Please... talk to your lawyer. Drop the civil lawsuits. We are your parents. We love you."
Evelyn looked down at the woman who had watched her daughter bleed and called it "making a scene."

"You don't love me, Mother," Evelyn said softly, her voice entirely devoid of anger, carrying only a profound, chilling clarity. "You loved the illusion of power that your family name gave you. And you loved the monster you created in Preston. You wanted a scene? You're living in it now."
Evelyn closed the door firmly, locking it with a heavy, definitive click.
