Chapter 3 - The Viral Outbreak

By 6:00 AM the following morning, the Sterling family name was completely incinerated. Evelyn hadn't just relied on the police; she knew her family's immense wealth could easily bribe judges and suppress traditional media outlets. Before leaving the security room, she had used her phone to record the playback monitor, and she uploaded the crystal-clear video directly to her personal Facebook page with a simple, devastating caption:
“This is my brother, Preston Sterling. This is my mother, Eleanor, and my father, Richard. They framed my 8-year-old daughter for theft at his wedding, and then he split her head open with an oak board. Share this until the Sterling family can no longer buy their way out of prison.”
The internet's reaction was a Category 5 viral storm. Within four hours, the post had accumulated over two million shares, five hundred thousand comments, and was trending worldwide on every major social media algorithm.
Evelyn sat in the private recovery room of Chicago Children's Hospital, holding Sophie’s small, warm hand. Sophie had received twelve stitches across her hairline and was suffering from a moderate concussion, but her vitals were stable.
The heavy oak door of the hospital room clicked open. Richard and Eleanor walked inside, stripped of their usual entourage, their faces haggard and exhausted from a night of avoiding reporters at their mansion.
"Evelyn," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling not with sorrow for her granddaughter, but with sheer desperation. "You have to take the video down. The Sterling Development Group's stock plummeted forty percent in pre-market trading this morning. Our bank lines are being frozen. Vanessa's family is threatening to annul the marriage and sue us for fraud."
"Good," Evelyn said, her voice completely flat as she stroked Sophie’s hair. "I hope you lose every single dollar."
"Don't be a stubborn fool, Evelyn!" Richard snapped, though he kept his voice low to avoid alerting the nurse station. "If the company collapses, your inheritance is gone too! Preston made a terrible, unhinged mistake, yes. But we can settle this privately. We will give you five million dollars, tax-free, and a luxury estate in Florida. Just release a statement saying it was a family misunderstanding and the video was edited out of context."

Evelyn slowly turned her head, looking at the parents who had spent thirty years treating her like an invisible shadow while enabling a monster.
"Five million dollars?" Evelyn let out a soft, chilling laugh. "You think my daughter’s blood can be bought for five million dollars? Get out of this room before I have hospital security drag you into the street in front of the cameras waiting downstairs."
