Chapter 4 - The Legal Execution

The legal war began with an efficiency that caught the Sterling family completely off guard. Evelyn didn't just hire a standard family attorney; she utilized her own savings—money she had quietly earned over a decade working as an independent data analyst, completely separate from her father's firm—to retain Julian Vance, the most ruthless civil rights and corporate prosecutor in the state.
Julian Vance arrived at the courthouse for Preston's bail hearing holding a massive leather briefcase. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, social media influencers, and angry citizens holding signs demanding justice for Sophie.
Preston sat at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hair messy, his eyes hollow with fear. His high-priced defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton, stood up confidently. "Your Honor, my client is a prominent community figure with zero criminal history. This was an isolated domestic incident with high emotional context. We ask for a standard signature bond and home confinement at his estate."
Julian Vance stepped up to the podium, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Your Honor, the state objects in the strongest possible terms. We have submitted the hotel’s unedited digital master CCTV footage. The defendant did not merely 'react.' He meticulously planned a fraudulent scheme to defame an eight-year-old child, and when challenged, he used a deadly weapon with intent to cause severe bodily harm."
Julian tapped his tablet, and the video of the blow played on the courtroom’s central monitor. Several people in the gallery gasped, and one of the jurors from a neighboring room who was watching threw her head back in horror.
"Furthermore," Julian continued, "we have uncovered financial records showing that Preston Sterling recently transferred three million dollars of corporate funds into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, indicating an extreme flight risk. We ask for zero bail."

The judge looked at the video, then down at Preston with absolute disgust. "Motion for bail is denied. The defendant will remain in maximum-security custody until the commencement of his trial for first-degree felony assault and child endangerment."
Preston burst into tears, screaming for his mother as two heavy-set bailiffs grabbed his arms and dragged him down into the holding cells. Eleanor collapsed into her husband's arms, weeping loudly as the realization of their complete societal execution began to sink in.
