Chapter 6 - The Accounting of Blood

The rain had stopped by the time the dawn light broke over the Atlantic coast, painting the sky in pale shades of pink and gold.
The Blackwood Mansion was no longer dark. The flashing blue and red lights of a dozen state police cruisers illuminated the long stone driveway. Federal agents were busy loading crates of documents from Charles’s corporate offices into the back of unmarked vans, while paramedics treated Daniel’s shoulder on the steps of the grand veranda.
Beatrice sat beside him, a warm wool blanket wrapped around both of their shoulders, her hand locked firmly inside his. The silver hard drive containing the complete records of Charles’s financial crimes was safely in the custody of the District Attorney.
Marco, the state police captain and an old friend of Daniel’s from his military days, walked over, holding a plastic evidence bag. Inside the bag sat the single silver cufflink with the crest of the roaring wolf.
"We found Charles," Marco said, lighting a cigarette against the morning chill. "He tried to board a private fishing vessel down at the docks, but his bank accounts had already been frozen by the federal treasury. His own men turned him in when they realized his money was no longer good. He’s looking at thirty years for attempted murder and corporate treason."
Daniel nodded quietly, a deep sense of relief washing over his tired frame. "And Arthur?"
"The hospital called ten minutes ago," Beatrice said, her voice thick with emotion as she looked up at Daniel, her hazel eyes radiant with a profound, unshielded devotion. "The antidote worked. He’s awake, he’s speaking, and the doctors say he’ll make a full recovery. He wants to see us, Daniel. Both of us."
Daniel looked down at her, the professional walls he had built around his heart over the past five years completely gone. "I’m just a security guard, Beatrice. My job was to protect the house."
May you like
"You didn't just protect the house, Daniel," Beatrice whispered, leaning up to press her forehead against his jaw, her breath warm against his skin. "You saved my family. You saved me. You’re not just a guard anymore. You’re part of this family now. If you’ll have us."
Daniel reached up with his uninjured arm, pulling her close against his chest, his lips finding hers in a deep, lingering kiss that sealed a vow no corporate contract could ever replicate.
