Chapter 4 - The Hunt in the Shadows

The Blackwood Mansion was dark, illuminated only by the occasional flash of lightning through the high windows. The low hum of the backup generators provided a tense, rhythmic soundtrack as Daniel and Beatrice moved through the secret service corridors behind the wood-paneled walls.

Charles’s men were moving through the main foyer, their heavy boots clicking against the marble floor, their flashlights cutting through the darkness like searchlights.

"Search every room!" Charles’s voice echoed through the grand hallway, cold, arrogant, and devoid of any familial love. "Find my niece. She has her father’s personal encryption key on her laptop. I want that drive before the lawyers awake in the morning. If she resists, handle it. We can always call it a tragic suicide brought on by grief over her father."

Inside the dark labyrinth of the walls, Beatrice leaned against Daniel’s chest, her breath shallow, her heart hammering violently. Daniel could feel the warmth of her body, a fierce protective instinct rising within him that transcended his duties as a security guard. Over the past five years, he had hidden his feelings for the billionaire’s daughter under a mask of professional distance, but tonight, with her life on the line, the boundaries were completely dissolving.

"Daniel," Beatrice whispered, her lips close to his ear, her eyes searching his face in the shadows. "The backup encryption drive isn't on my laptop. It’s in my father’s private vault inside the conservatory. If Charles gets it, he can delete all the evidence of his embezzlement."

"Then we get to the conservatory first," Daniel murmured, his hand gently stroking her hair to calm her trembling. "Stay behind me. If anything happens, you run for the main gate. Don't look back."

"I’m not leaving you, Daniel," she said fiercely, her hand tightening around his shirt. "Not after everything."

Daniel offered her a rare, genuine smile that transformed his rugged features. "Then let's take back your house."

Daniel slipped out of a hidden panel near the gallery, his weapon raised. He moved like a shadow, using the massive marble pillars for cover. One of Charles’s tactical guards was searching the art collection, his flashlight moving across a painting of Arthur Blackwood.

Before the guard could turn around, Daniel closed the distance with lightning speed. He struck the man in the temple with the butt of his pistol, catching his falling body before it could hit the floor and making a sound. Daniel quickly stripped the guard of his radio and his weapon, tossing them to Beatrice.

"One down," Daniel whispered.

But as they moved toward the glass doors of the conservatory, a sharp click echoed through the dark hallway behind them.

The bright beam of a high-powered flashlight hit Daniel directly in the eyes.

"Well, well," Charles Blackwood purred, stepping out of the shadows of the library, flanked by his remaining two armed security guards. "Daniel, the loyal watchdog. I must admit, I underestimated your vigilance. I thought you’d be at the hospital weeping over my brother's bedside."

"Your brother is alive, Charles," Daniel said, keeping his body positioned squarely in front of Beatrice, his gun trained on Charles’s chest. "And the doctors have already identified the toxin. The police are going to find your cufflink in the library, and they’re going to find your boarding pass. It’s over."

Charles laughed, a dry, cruel sound that bounced off the glass walls of the conservatory. "Over? My dear boy, I own the judges in this district. By tomorrow morning, I will be the master of this estate, and you will be nothing but a rogue security guard who killed my niece in a tragic home invasion. Eliminate them."
