Chapter 3 - The Cryptic Ledger

By five o'clock in the morning, the rain began to lash against the high stained-glass windows of the Blackwood estate. The police had left, satisfied with their initial report of a natural medical emergency, leaving Daniel and Beatrice alone in the massive house to uncover a truth the authorities were too blind to see.

In the subterranean security office, Daniel lined up the evidence on a steel table: the silver cufflink, the crumpled boarding pass, and a digital printout of the mansion’s security logs.

"Look at this," Daniel said, pointing a finger at the monitor screen as Beatrice leaned over his shoulder. "At 8:40 PM, ten minutes before your father collapsed, the security grid for the west wing conservatory went offline for exactly ninety seconds. It wasn't a system glitch. Someone used an administrative override keycard to manually bypass the biometric sensors."

"Only three people have that level of access," Beatrice whispered, her face draining of color. "My father, me... and Charles."

"Charles didn't just want your father dead, Beatrice," Daniel said, his dark eyes scanning the data. "He needed him dead before the board meeting on Friday. I started looking into the corporate accounts after you showed me that boarding pass. Over the last fiscal quarter, someone has been systematically siphoning tens of millions of dollars out of the Blackwood offshore logistics funds, routing them through dummy corporations in Panama."

Beatrice gasped, clutching the edge of the steel table. "Charles handles all the logistics contracts. If my father had discovered the theft at the board meeting, he would have stripped Charles of his shares and turned him over to the federal authorities."

"Exactly," Daniel nodded, his voice cold and analytical. "But it gets worse. Look at the final destination of the stolen funds. They aren't just sitting in a bank account. They’re being used to buy out the voting blocks of the secondary shareholders. Charles is planning a hostile takeover. With your father in a coma or dead, Charles automatically becomes the interim CEO, giving him full voting power over the entire family trust."

Suddenly, the security monitors on the wall began to flicker. The live feed from the front gate went completely dark, replaced by a screen of static.

Daniel’s military training kicked in instantly. He reached under his desk, pulling out his communication device, but the line was dead. "The main power line to the estate has been cut. The backup generators are starting up, but the communication array is jammed. We’re isolated."

"Daniel, look at monitor four," Beatrice said, her voice rising in panic as she pointed to a low-angle camera covering the private driveway.

Through the pouring rain and the dim light of the backup lights, a sleek black SUV pulled up to the main entrance. The doors opened, and three men dressed in dark tactical gear stepped out, followed by a tall, elegant man carrying a silver-tipped walking cane.

Charles Blackwood.

He didn't look like a grieving brother. His face was set in a cold, triumphant smile as he used his master electronic keycard to unlock the heavy front doors of the mansion.

"He’s not waiting for Friday," Daniel said, pulling his service pistol from his holster and checking the magazine. "He’s here to clean up the loose ends. He knows your father might survive the poison, and he knows you’re the only other person who can challenge his claim to the trust."

"What do we do?" Beatrice asked, her hazel eyes filled with terror but her posture remaining defiant.

Daniel grabbed her hand, his grip warm, solid, and fiercely protective. "We don't let him find the ledger. And more importantly, I don't let him touch you. Let's go."
