Chapter 2 - The Vanguard of the Empire

“Get off this property, Father,” Elliot said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register.
Richard Vance stopped at the edge of the lawn, his eyes narrowing as he adjusted his tailored cuffs. “You’re making a monumental mistake, son. The board is already panicking. The stocks dropped two percent the moment the news broke that you boarded a flight back to Boston alone. You belong in Italy, fixing your marriage with Camille, not standing on a rotting porch in Cape Cod.”
“The marriage to Camille is over. It was never real, and you know it. You engineered it,” Elliot countered, stepping down from the porch, his fists tightly clenched. “And as for the board, I own fifty-one percent of the voting shares. I am the empire, Richard. Not you. Not anymore.”
Naomi watched the two men from the doorway, her heart hammering against her ribs. She felt a sudden, suffocating wave of nostalgia—the same toxic Vance family drama that had made her flee three years ago. She opened the screen door and stepped out, her voice clear and resolute.
“Both of you need to leave,” Naomi said, looking directly at Richard, refusing to let him intimidate her any longer. “This is my home. My daughter is inside sleeping. I don't care about your stocks, your boards, or your family name. If you don't get off my lawn right now, I’m calling the local police.”
Richard sneered, a condescending smirk crossing his face. “Still as fiercely uncultured as ever, I see, Miss Keller. Do you honestly think a local police report will stop me? I can buy this entire town by sunset. If that child inside is a Vance, she belongs in a proper estate, receiving a proper education, not raised in a fishing shack by a waitress.”
“Don't you dare speak to her like that,” Elliot growled, stepping directly into his father's personal space. The contrast between the two men was stark—Richard was the old world of cold calculated malice; Elliot was raw, unyielding power driven by a sudden, fierce protective instinct. “If you ever threaten Naomi or my daughter again, I will strip you of every title, every board seat, and every penthouse associated with Vance Enterprises. Try me.”
Richard saw the absolute seriousness in his son's eyes and stepped back, his expression turning cold as ice. “You’re throwing away everything I built for you, Elliot. For what? A past you already outgrew?”
“For my family,” Elliot said simply.
Richard didn't say another word. He turned on his heel, climbed back into his town car, and sped away, leaving a cloud of dust in the quiet coastal air.
Elliot turned back to Naomi, his chest heaving. The silence between them grew thick again.
“He’s right about one thing, Elliot,” Naomi whispered, hugging herself against the ocean breeze. “The media is going to find out. The moment they realize why you left Italy, my life, Bella’s life... it will be destroyed. The paparazzi will hunt us down. I can't do that to her.”

Elliot walked up the steps and gently placed his hands on her shoulders. “They won't touch you. I swear it. But Naomi... please. Give me a chance to be the man I was supposed to be three years ago. Let’s do a DNA test. Let’s make it official so I can put a legal shield around both of you that even my father can't penetrate.”
Naomi looked into his grey eyes—the exact same eyes as her daughter’s—and saw the sincerity she had craved for years. She nodded slowly. “Okay. We’ll do the test.”
