Chapter 1 - The Truth in the Cape Cod Breeze

The question hung in the humid Cape Cod air, heavy enough to stop the world from turning. “Are you my daddy?”

Elliot Vance, a man who had faced down ruthless corporate raiders and signed billion-dollar mergers without a single blink, felt his knees go weak. He slowly sank to one knee on the weathered wooden porch, bringing himself down to eye level with the little girl. Up close, the resemblance wasn’t just striking—it was undeniable. She had the exact same ringlet curls, the same silver-grey eyes, and that unmistakable, deep-set chin.

“Bella, sweetie, go back inside and play with Ellie Elephant for just a minute,” Naomi said, her voice trembling as she stepped between Elliot and her daughter. Her hands were clenched into tight fists at her sides, a defensive shield born from three years of solitary survival.

Bella looked between the two adults with wide, perceptive eyes, gave a small nod, and retreated into the living room.

The moment the screen door clicked shut, Naomi turned on Elliot, her eyes flashing with a mixture of fear and fury. “What are you doing here, Elliot? Why aren't you in Italy? You’re supposed to be on your honeymoon. Your face is all over the tabloids!”

Elliot stood up slowly, towering over her, but his posture held none of his usual arrogance. “The honeymoon is over, Naomi. Camille and I... it’s done. She signed an annulment.” He took a step closer, his eyes pleading. “I couldn't stay there. Not after seeing you at Gate C12. Not after seeing her.”

Naomi let out a bitter, breathless laugh, shaking her head as she crossed her arms. “So what? You see a child who looks like you, and you just blow up your brand-new marriage? You drop everything to come poke around my life?”

“She is mine, isn't she?” Elliot’s voice cracked, a rare vulnerability breaking through his billionaire facade. “Naomi, please. Look me in the eye and tell me the truth. I deserve that much. She’s three years old. The timeline, the eyes, the way she looks at me... Please.”

Naomi bit her lower lip so hard it nearly bled. She looked away, out toward the gray Atlantic horizon. The secret she had carried like a lead weight in her chest for forty long months was fracturing. “And what if she is, Elliot? What does it change? You walked away from me three years ago because your family wanted a high-society merger. You chose the Vance empire over us. I found out I was pregnant two weeks after you let your father tell me I wasn't enough for your world!”

“I didn't know!” Elliot roared gently, capturing her hands in his. His palms were hot, shaking. “My father told me you took a settlement and left the country! He intercepted my calls, Naomi! I thought you hated me. By the time I realized what he had done, it was too late, and the machinery of the wedding was already moving. But the second I saw you at that airport... I knew I’d been living a lie.”

Tears finally spilled over Naomi’s lashes. The anger drained out of her, leaving only the profound exhaustion of a single mother who had given up everything to protect her sanctuary.

Before she could answer, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb of her quiet street. The door opened, and a tall, impeccably dressed older man stepped out. It was Richard Vance—Elliot’s billionaire father, the architect of the very lie that had torn them apart.

“Elliot!” Richard’s voice boomed across the yard, cold and demanding. “Get away from that woman. You’ve already caused a PR nightmare by abandoning Camille in Florence. I won't let you ruin the family name over a common gold-digger and a bastard child.”

Elliot’s jaw set into stone. He let go of Naomi’s hands and stepped in front of her, his entire frame shielding her from his father’s approach. The war for his future had officially begun.
