Chapter 8 - The Desperate Ploy

Just as the family felt entirely secure, Brenda attempted one final, illegal gamble. She knew she couldn't break the legal barriers Marcus had built, so she sought to exploit the only vulnerability she thought remained: Maya’s kindness.
Taking advantage of Marcus being away at an international legal conference for forty-eight hours, Brenda drove down from upstate New York in a battered, borrowed sedan. She parked down the street from Marcus and Maya’s home, waiting for the perfect moment.
When Maya stepped outside to water the porch plants while Lily was napping under the watchful eye of the nanny inside, Brenda emerged from the shadows. She looked vastly different from the woman who had lounged under the cashmere throws. Her designer clothes were replaced by faded, off-brand garments, her hair unkempt, her face lined with bitterness and exhaustion.
"Maya," Brenda called out, her voice cracked and strained.
Maya startled, dropping the watering can. Her instinct was to run back inside, but Brenda fell to her knees on the driveway, weeping loudly.
"Please, Maya! You have to listen to me!" Brenda begged, her hands clasped together. "Marcus has ruined us! Rachel and I are living in squalor! We don't have enough money for heating this winter! I know I was harsh, I know I was difficult, but I am an old woman! Please, talk to your husband. Tell him to drop the defamation suit against Rachel. She’s falling apart!"
Maya stood her ground, her hand protectively over her belly. She looked down at the woman who had once treated her like dirt. There was no fear in Maya’s eyes anymore—only a profound, calm clarity.
"You aren't sorry for what you did to Lily or me, Brenda," Maya said, her voice steady and clear. "You’re only sorry that Marcus made you face the consequences."
"That’s not true! I love my granddaughter!" Brenda cried, reaching out toward Maya’s shoes.
"Don't," Maya said, stepping back firmly. "When Lily was burning with a fever, you turned up the television. When I was starving and dehydrated, you called me stubborn and controlling. You didn't see us as human beings; you saw us as obstacles to your comfort. You came to my house expecting a free resort, and now you’re paying the price for your cruelty."
Before Brenda could speak, the private security guards Marcus had hired stepped out from the side gate, body cameras flashing as they recorded the interaction.
"Madam, you are violating a formal restraining order," the head guard said, stepping between Brenda and Maya. "The police have already been dispatched. Stand up and step away from the property immediately."

Brenda’s tearful facade shattered instantly, replaced by the same venomous glare she had worn in the foyer months ago. "You ungrateful little peasant," she spat at Maya as the guards secured her arms. "You think you’ve won? Marcus will grow tired of you eventually!"
"He never will," Maya said quietly, turning her back on her mother-in-law and walking back into her warm, safe home, closing the door firmly behind her.
