Chapter 3 - Retaliation

By the next afternoon, Lily’s fever had broken, and Maya’s color had returned, though she remained visibly shaken. Marcus had arranged for a private security detail to stand guard outside their home, ensuring Brenda and Rachel couldn't return to cause further distress.
However, Brenda wasn't the type to retreat quietly. By late afternoon, the first wave of her counter-attack hit the public sphere.
Maya was resting when her phone began chiming incessantly. She picked it up to find dozens of notifications from Facebook, Instagram, and local community groups. Rachel had posted a highly edited, emotionally manipulative video taken from her tablet during the confrontation in the foyer. The video showed Marcus shouting at his elderly mother, pointing at the door, and demanding they leave, completely omitting the context of Lily’s illness and Maya’s state.
The caption read: “Heartbroken. My brother Marcus has completely lost his mind, kicking our elderly mother out onto the streets in the middle of the night just because we tried to visit our niece. He’s using his legal power to starve his own family out of their inheritance. Please pray for him and the poor woman trapped in that house with him.”
The comments were a toxic wasteland. People who didn't know the full story were labeling Marcus a monster and Maya a manipulative enabler. Local clients of Marcus’s law firm were already tagging the company page, demanding statements.
"Marcus..." Maya called out, her voice trembling as she handed him the phone.
Marcus read the post, his expression hardening into stone. "She thinks she can leverage social media against a court of law. How incredibly foolish."
He pulled out his own phone and called his firm’s PR and digital forensics team. "Launch the counter-campaign. Upload the full, unedited security footage from the living room and kitchen cameras. Include the audio where Brenda says they 'ordered dinner last night' while Maya was starved, and include the timestamped footage of Lily coughing while they laughed at their tablet. Tag every major news outlet in the state."
Within two hours, the internet witnessed a spectacular narrative shift. The unedited footage went viral, racking up millions of views across multiple platforms. The contrast between a heavily pregnant woman struggling to breathe while holding a feverish toddler and two wealthy women lounging under luxury throws laughing at videos was stark and undeniable. The public backlash against Brenda and Rachel was swift and devastating. Rachel’s social media accounts were flooded with condemnation, forcing her to deactivate them within an hour.

But the real blow landed when the board of directors for the prestigious charity gala Brenda chaired caught wind of the video. Marcus received a text from the board president: “Marcus, we are appalled by the footage. Brenda has been asked to resign from the committee effective immediately. We stand with you and Maya.”
"They tried to ruin our reputation," Marcus said, sitting on the edge of Maya’s hospital bed and taking her hand. "But they forgot that the truth doesn't need to be edited to be powerful."
