Chapter 5 - Unraveling Alliances

With her back against the wall, Brenda attempted one final, desperate play. She knew she couldn't break Marcus legally, so she targeted the extended family network, hoping to turn Marcus’s aunts, uncles, and cousins against him to force his hand.
She called an emergency family summit at a high-end restaurant downtown, using the last of her available cash to rent out a private dining room. She painted herself as the victim of a ruthless, power-hungry son who was using his legal leverage to hoard the family wealth.
"He’s doing this because of that girl," Brenda told her brother, Uncle Charles, a major stakeholder in the family’s remaining commercial ventures. "Maya has poisoned his mind. She wants the entire legacy for herself and her children. If we don't stop Marcus now, he’ll freeze your accounts next!"
Charles, a pragmatic businessman, frowned deeply. He had seen the viral video, and he wasn't entirely convinced by Brenda’s tears. "Brenda, the video looked terrible. The child was severely ill. Why didn't you just call an ambulance?"
"It was an exaggeration!" Rachel chimed in, her voice shrill. "Maya was just trying to make us look bad because we didn't want to eat her terrible cooking! Marcus is using it as an excuse to seize control of the trust!"
Before Charles could reply, the heavy doors of the private dining room opened. Marcus walked in, dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal suit. Beside him was not a team of lawyers, but his senior investigator, holding a digital projector.
"I’m glad you’re all here," Marcus said, his voice echoing in the opulent room. "It saves me the trouble of sending certified mail to each of your residences."
"Marcus! You weren't invited here!" Brenda screamed, standing up.
"I own the building this restaurant is in, Mother. I go where I please," Marcus replied calmly. He signaled his investigator, who quickly set up the projector against the far wall. "Before you choose sides in Brenda’s little melodrama, I think you should see the true financial health of the Vanguard legacy under her stewardship."
The screen flickered to life, displaying a series of complex financial spreadsheets and offshore bank account records.
"For the past three years, Brenda has been skimming profits from the commercial real estate sector—the very sector that funds your quarterly dividends, Uncle Charles," Marcus explained, pointing to a highlighted column of figures. "She’s been using it to fund Rachel’s failed fashion line in Europe and to pay off gambling debts incurred by her ex-husband in Macau. Total misappropriation? Six point four million dollars."
The room erupted into furious murmurs. Uncle Charles stood up, his face turning red as he stared at the evidence. "Brenda! Is this true? Our dividends were cut by thirty percent last year! You told us it was due to market downturns!"
"He’s lying! He fabricated those documents!" Brenda shouted, her voice cracking with panic.
"These are certified bank audits, Charles," Marcus said, handing a physical copy to his uncle. "If I don't freeze the trust and excise Brenda from the management structure, the entire portfolio will collapse into bankruptcy within the next twelve months. I'm not hoarding the wealth. I’m saving it from her."
Uncle Charles looked at the papers, then looked at his sister with disgust. "You selfish, manipulative fool," he whispered to Brenda. He then looked at Marcus. "What do you need from us?"

"Sign the petition to remove her as managing trustee," Marcus said simply. "Let me stabilize the assets, and I will guarantee your dividends return to their original value by next quarter."
One by one, the family members stood up, turning their backs on Brenda and Rachel to sign Marcus’s document. The alliance Brenda spent a lifetime cultivating shattered in less than fifteen minutes.
