Chapter 4 - The Legal Notice

Two days later, the family was finally back home. The house had been professionally cleaned, the smell of burnt milk replaced by the clean scent of lavender and eucalyptus. Lily was resting comfortably in her crib, her breathing deep and clear. Maya was resting on the sofa, wrapped in a fresh blanket that belonged exclusively to their own collection.
The peace was interrupted by the sharp ringing of the doorbell. The security guard stationed outside checked the visitor and radioed Marcus. "Mr. Vanguard, it’s Arthur Pendelton. He says he has urgent documents from your mother."
"Let him in," Marcus said coldly.
Arthur Pendelton walked into the living room looking like a man who hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. He was a veteran attorney, but he knew when he was outmatched. He placed a thick manila folder on the coffee table.
"Marcus," Arthur began, his voice weary. "Your mother is desperate. The freezing of the Vanguard Trust has already triggered a default clause on her penthouse mortgage in New York. If the accounts aren't unfrozen by the end of the week, the bank will initiate foreclosure proceedings. She’s willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement and a formal apology if you drop the audit."
Marcus didn't touch the folder. Instead, he drew a single, folded piece of paper from his pocket and slid it across the table toward Arthur.
"This is a formal petition for the permanent removal of Brenda Vanguard as a beneficiary of the Vanguard Family Trust on the grounds of moral turpitude and financial mismanagement," Marcus said smoothly. "I have documented three distinct instances over the last five years where she used trust funds to pay off personal debts that were disguised as corporate investments. That’s fraud, Arthur. And if you present her defense in court, you’ll be complicit."
Arthur’s eyes widened as he scanned the document. He looked up at Marcus, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. "Marcus... this will destroy her. She will have nothing left but her personal savings, which won't last a year at her current spending rate."
"Then she should learn to live within her means," Marcus said without a shred of pity. "Furthermore, there is a lifetime restraining order attached to that petition. She is never to come within five hundred feet of Maya, Lily, or our unborn child. If she attempts to contact them, I will personally ensure the district attorney files criminal charges based on the medical evidence from the ER."
"And Rachel?" Arthur asked quietly.
"Rachel is an adult who has chosen to live off Mother’s ill-gotten gains," Marcus replied. "She has twenty-four hours to delete every defamatory post she made and issue a public retraction, or my firm will sue her for civil defamation to the tune of five million dollars. I know she doesn't have that money, Arthur. Which means she’ll be paying off that judgment for the rest of her life."

Arthur closed his briefcase, his hands shaking slightly. "I will advise my client to accept the terms. God help her, Marcus. You really are your father’s son."
"No," Marcus said, looking over at Maya, who was watching him with deep affection and relief. "My father let her dictate the family's happiness for thirty years. I am a completely different man."
