Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

Six months later.
The final criminal trial of Gabriel Vance and Patricia Vance reached its conclusion at the Fulton County Justice Center.
The jury deliberated for a total of forty-five minutes before returning to the courtroom with their verdict.
Gabriel sat at the defense table, looking utterly gaunt, his face hollow, his former arrogant demeanor replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated terror. Patricia sat beside him, shaking uncontrollably, her fingers tightly clutching her public defender's arm.
"Will the defendants please rise for the verdict," Judge Coleman ordered.
Gabriel and Patricia stood up trembling.
"On count one, aggravated battery upon a spouse, how do you find the defendant, Gabriel Vance?" Judge Coleman asked the jury foreperson.
"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreperson announced clearly.
"On count two, felony domestic violence... guilty." "On count three, corporate wire fraud... guilty." "On count four, filing a false police report... guilty."
Gabriel's knees buckled, and he collapsed back into his chair, sobbing bitterly into his hands.
"And on count one, accessory to aggravated battery, how do you find the defendant, Patricia Vance?"
"Guilty, Your Honor." "On count two, tampering with physical evidence... guilty."
Judge Coleman nodded grimly, looking down at the defendants.
"Gabriel Vance," Judge Coleman addressed the courtroom, his voice echoing like an iron gong. "For your horrific, premeditated acts of violence and financial exploitation, I sentence you to twenty-five years in the Georgia State Penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years."
Gabriel let out a choked scream, burying his face in his arms.
"Patricia Vance," the judge continued. "For your malicious role in facilitating this assault and attempting to frame the victim, I sentence you to ten years in state custody."
"Chloe Miller, for your role in corporate embezzlement, three years in state custody followed by five years of probation."
The gavel struck the block with a final, echoing crash.
As the court officers stepped forward to drag Gabriel and Patricia away to serve their lengthy prison sentences, Gabriel turned his head frantically toward the gallery where I sat.

"Evelyn! Please! Forgive me!" Gabriel cried out, his voice filled with pathetic desperation as he was pulled through the holding door. "I still love you! Please!"
I didn't say a word. I didn't even blink. I simply watched him disappear behind the heavy steel doors, closing the chapter on his existence forever.
