Chapter 2 - The Morning Trap

At 7:00 AM, the bedroom door handle rattled violently.
"Evelyn! Get up!" Patricia’s grating voice shouted from the hallway, followed by three sharp bangs on the wood. "Gabriel needs his dry cleaning picked up, and I want breakfast made properly today. Stop hiding in there!"
I took a deep breath, adjusting my expression to look terrified, frail, and thoroughly broken. I unlatched the heavy deadbolt and slowly pulled the door open.
Patricia stood there holding a cup of coffee, dressed in a gaudy silk robe she had taken from my guest closet. Behind her, Gabriel walked out of the guest room, adjusting his tie, looking like an arrogant corporate executive getting ready for work.
"It's about time," Gabriel sneered, stepping up beside his mother. "Look at you, still sniveling. My mother spoke to you, Evelyn. Go downstairs and start the coffee."
"Gabriel... my legs are severely burned," I whimpered, clutching the doorframe, forcing my body to tremble. "The doctor said I shouldn't stand for more than five minutes..."
"The doctor doesn't run this house, I do," Gabriel snapped, stepping into my personal space until his chest almost brushed mine. "You're going to be a proper wife, or yesterday was just a trailer of what your life is going to look like. Do you understand me?"
Patricia smirked, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "She understands, Gabriel. She knows her place now. Don't forget, dear, we're meeting with your estate lawyer at noon to begin transferring the deed of this condo into Gabriel's name for 'asset protection.'"
"Of course, Mother," Gabriel smiled wickedly, turning back to me. "Have your ID and property documents ready on the kitchen counter by eleven, Evelyn. If you make a scene, I'll make sure the next skillet lands on your face."
Before I could answer, the front door keypad beeped, and the heavy lock clicked open.
Gabriel frowned, spinning around. "What the hell? Who has the code?"
Four men in sharp dark suits walked into the foyer, led by Marcus Sterling. Behind them stood two uniformed officers from the Atlanta Police Department and a team of paramedics carrying a specialized transport chair.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Patricia shrieked, dropping her coffee cup onto the rug. "This is a private residence! Get out!"
Marcus Sterling walked forward, his icy gray eyes locking onto Gabriel with absolute contempt. "Gabriel Vance, my name is Marcus Sterling. I am the executor of the Richard Vance estate and senior legal counsel to Evelyn Vance."
Gabriel tried to puff out his chest, stepping in front of his mother. "This is my home! I am her husband! You have no right to barge in here!"
"Correction," Marcus said smoothly, gesturing to the lead police officer. "This property is held under a private family trust owned exclusively by Evelyn. And as of ten minutes ago, a Superior Court judge signed an emergency temporary restraining order removing you and your mother from these premises immediately."
"Restraining order?!" Gabriel yelled, his face turning red. "On what grounds?! She had an accident yesterday! She dropped a pan on herself because she's clumsy!"
"Is that your official statement, Mr. Vance?" Officer Ramirez asked, pulling out a digital recorder and turning it on. "You claim your wife dropped the skillet on herself?"
"Yes! Ask my mother! She was standing right there!" Gabriel shouted frantically. "Evelyn is mentally unstable! She's making up lies because she's stressed!"

Marcus pulled a tablet from his leather briefcase and turned the screen toward Gabriel and Patricia.
"Then perhaps you'd like to explain this to the officer," Marcus said coldly, hitting play.
