Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Patricia

Two weeks later, the preliminary bail hearing for Gabriel and Patricia Vance took place at the Fulton County Superior Court.

The courtroom was packed with media reporters, local socialites, and television cameras. News of the "Boiling Sauce Betrayal" had gone viral across social media platforms, turning the Vance family into pariahs overnight.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp, elegant navy wool suit, my legs still neatly wrapped in medical bandages under my trousers. Beside me sat Marcus Sterling and two private security guards.

Patricia and Gabriel were led into the courtroom in iron wrist shackles and ankle chains. Patricia, who used to spend thousands of dollars a week on designer clothes and hair salons, looked shattered. Her hair was graying at the roots, her clothes were ill-fitting jail uniforms, and her eyes darted around the courtroom in wild panic.

When she saw me sitting in the gallery, her face twisted with pure venom.

"You bitch!" Patricia shrieked, breaking away from the guard and lunging toward the wooden gallery partition. "You set my son up! You ruined our lives! You belong in hell!"

The court bailiffs immediately tackled Patricia to the carpet, pinning her arms behind her back as she kicked and screamed like a feral animal.

"Order in the court!" Judge Harold Coleman slammed his heavy wooden gavel down repeatedly. "Control your client, counselor, or I will have her bound and gagged!"

Patricia's public defender—appointed by the state because her family could no longer afford private legal representation—looked thoroughly embarrassed. "My apologies, Your Honor! My client is under extreme emotional distress!"

"Your Honor," the District Attorney, Sarah Jenkins, stood up at the prosecution table. "The State moves for the immediate denial of bail for both defendants. The video evidence clearly shows a cold, calculated act of extreme violence, followed by an immediate conspiracy to tamper with evidence and intimidate the victim."

"The defense claims this was an unfortunate household accident," Patricia's public defender argued weakly.

Judge Coleman looked down at the tablet on his desk, rewatching the crystal-clear 4K footage of Gabriel pouring the boiling liquid while Patricia wiped the skillet handle.

"An accident?" Judge Coleman scoffed, his voice filled with absolute disgust. "Counselor, I have been on the bench for twenty-eight years, and this is one of the most chilling demonstrations of domestic cruelty I have ever witnessed. The defendant, Gabriel Vance, showed zero human empathy while his wife screamed on the floor. And the defendant, Patricia Vance, actively facilitated the crime."

Judge Coleman looked up, his eyes locking onto Gabriel and Patricia.

"Bail is denied for both defendants," Judge Coleman declared loudly. "They will remain in federal custody until the commencement of their criminal trial. Furthermore, a permanent, lifetime protective order is issued prohibiting either defendant, or their associates, from coming within one thousand feet of Evelyn Vance."

The gavel struck the block with a resounding crack.

Gabriel collapsed onto the defense table, sobbing hysterically, while Patricia was dragged out of the courtroom by three bailiffs, screaming obscenities until the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her.
