Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Fortress

One month later.

The physical scars on my legs were healing well under the care of the top dermatologists in the country. The mental scars, however, required work—but every single day brought a newfound sense of strength and liberation.

With Marcus's help, the annulment was officially granted by a Superior Court judge. My legal name was restored to Evelyn Vance-Sterling, completely erasing any marital connection to Gabriel.

The auction of Vance Logistics and the Vance family estate took place on a bright Friday morning.

I sat inside a private black SUV parked across the street from the county courthouse steps, watching as the auctioneer hammered down the final sales of the Vance assets. Commercial trucks, real estate deeds, luxury sports cars, and high-end jewelry were sold off to the highest bidders to satisfy the court's restitution order.

After all debts and legal fees were settled, the court awarded me twelve million dollars in direct criminal restitution, along with complete ownership of Vance Logistics' remaining real estate holdings.

Instead of keeping the money, I instructed Marcus to set up a charitable foundation in my father's name: The Richard Vance Sanctuary for Victims of Domestic Abuse.

The foundation purchased the former Vance family estate in Buckhead, converting the sprawling six-bedroom mansion into a high-security emergency shelter and rehabilitation center for women and children escaping domestic violence.

On the day the sanctuary opened, I stood on the front lawn, cutting the red ribbon in front of local news crews, community leaders, and domestic violence advocates.

"My father taught me that true strength isn't about avoiding pain," I said into the microphones, my voice steady, resonant, and full of grace. "It's about standing up in the midst of darkness and turning your pain into a shield for others. This home, which was once built on arrogance and greed, will now be a haven of safety, healing, and hope."

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.

As I stepped down from the podium, Marcus walked up beside me, handing me a glass of sparkling water. "Your father would be immensely proud of you today, Evelyn."

"I know he is, Marcus," I smiled, looking up at the clear blue sky. "He gave me the tools to protect myself, and now we're using them to protect hundreds of others."
