Chapter 9 - The Second Birthday

The summer breeze was warm and gentle over the back lawn of my new home in Evanston, Illinois.
Balloons in shades of gold and soft pink fluttered near the garden patio, where a small gathering of close friends, legal partners, and family had gathered to celebrate Clara's second birthday.
Clara ran across the green grass in a little white sundress, her soft golden curls bouncing as she chased a trail of bubbles blown by Caleb. Her laugh was bright, loud, and completely free of fear.
Julian stood near the outdoor grill, laughing and chatting with my former legal team, looking completely at home among the people I loved.
I sat on the patio bench, holding a camera, capturing every second of my daughter's joy.
My mother's old gold locket hung around my neck. Inside was a tiny photograph of my grandmother on one side, and a picture of Clara on the other.
"Mommy! Look!" Clara squealed, running up to me with a handful of yellow dandelions, her little hands pressing them into my palm.
"They are beautiful, my sweet girl," I said, pulling her into my lap and kissing her warm, sun-scented cheek.
Julian walked over, setting two glasses of fresh lemonade on the table before sitting down beside us. Clara immediately reached out her tiny arms toward him, and Julian picked her up effortlessly, setting her on his shoulder as she giggled with delight.
"She has your eyes, Mia," Julian said softly, looking at me over Clara's head.

"She has my heart," I replied, leaning my head gently against his shoulder.
For the first time in four years, I felt no ghost of the past lingering in the shadows. The painful miscarriages, the cold nights in Ryan's mansion, the bitter insults from his mother, and the betrayal that had once threatened to break me were all completely gone—replaced by a peace that could never be stolen.
