Chapter 4 - The Public Spectacle

Silence descended upon the foyer like a physical weight.

Beatrice’s mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out. Ryan stared at the paper in absolute, paralyzed horror, his eyes scanning the certified lab markers, the state seal, and his own legal name listed under Biological Father.

"A... a baby?" Ryan stammered, his face draining of all color. "You... you were pregnant?"

"I was pregnant when you served me with divorce papers eight months ago," I said calmly. "I was pregnant when your mother called me broken and barren in front of your entire family. I was pregnant when Lauren sent flowers to my apartment telling me that 'some women are chosen.'"

I turned my gaze to Lauren, whose face had gone entirely white, her hand trembling violently against her father's arm.

"You thought I couldn't carry a child, Ryan," I continued, stepping closer to him as he shrank back slightly. "You told me my body was broken. But the only thing broken in our marriage was your integrity."

"Mia... wait," Ryan whispered, a sudden, terrifying flash of realization hitting him. "A daughter? I... I have a daughter?"

"She has my name," I said firmly. "She will never carry the name Brooks. And as of eight o'clock this morning, a family court judge signed an emergency order revoking all your parental rights pending the outcome of the criminal fraud investigation."

"You can't do this!" Beatrice shrieked, finally finding her voice as she stepped forward, tears of fury springing to her eyes. "That child is a Brooks! She is my granddaughter! You hid her from us!"

"I protected her from you," I corrected coldly, looking Beatrice dead in the eye. "Just as I am protecting my grandmother's legacy."

Arthur Ward turned slowly to face Ryan. His expression was no longer that of a proud father-in-law, but of a ruthless corporate predator who realized he had been dragged into a trap.

"Ryan," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register. "Is this true? Did you use fraudulent trust funds as the primary capital for the Apex merger?"

"Arthur, listen to me," Ryan pleaded frantically, sweating through his tuxedo collar. "She's lying! She forged those financial reports! She's bitter because I left her!"

"I didn't forge anything, Mr. Ward," I said, pulling three USB flash drives from my coat pocket and handing one directly to Arthur. "On that drive, you'll find the complete SWIFT transfer codes linking Brooks Capital's main account directly to your personal offshore entity in the Cayman Islands. If Ryan goes down for wire fraud, Apex Holdings goes down as an unindicted co-conspirator."

Arthur took the drive, his hand tightening around it until his knuckles turned white. He looked at Ryan with utter disgust.

"The wedding is canceled," Arthur declared flatly.

"WHAT?!" Lauren screamed, bursting into hysterical tears as she grabbed her father's arm. "Dad, no! You can't cancel the wedding! The guests are all out there! The press is here!"

"Shut up, Lauren!" Arthur barked, shoving his own daughter's hand away. "This idiot just handed the SEC the key to my entire corporate portfolio! There is no wedding!"
