Chapter 3 - The UnravelingRyan’s brow furrowed slightly as he noticed the heavy leather portfolio in my hands. "What is that?"

"It's a complete accounting of your financial life over the last twenty-four months," I replied, my tone flat and even. "Including the two million dollars taken from my grandmother’s estate through forged power-of-attorney documents."
Beatrice let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "Forged documents?! You ungrateful girl! That money was reinvested into Brooks Capital to save the firm during the market downturn! You owed that to this family after wasting three years of Ryan's life without producing a child!"
"Mother, quiet," Ryan snapped, his posture suddenly rigid as he noticed two senior board members from his firm walking toward us, watching the interaction with interest.
"Is everything alright here, Ryan?" asked Arthur Ward, stepping out from the VIP lounge. Lauren's father was a wide, imposing man with graying hair and sharp, predatory eyes. Beside him stood Lauren, wearing a massive diamond-encrated bridal gown, her stomach showing a slight, subtle bump.
Lauren’s eyes widened when she saw me standing in the foyer. She instinctively clutched Arthur's arm, her face twisting in disgust. "Ryan, why is she here? I told you I didn't want your psychotic ex-wife ruining our day!"
"She's just leaving, darling," Ryan said quickly, stepping into my space, his voice dropping into a dark, threatening whisper. "Mia, get out of here right now before I have my security team throw you out into the street. You have no proof of anything, and if you cause a scene, I’ll sue you for defamation until you're completely destitute."
"I have three copies of the forensic audit, Ryan," I said loudly enough for Arthur Ward and the gathering crowd to hear clearly. "And I've already electronically submitted the originals to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Illinois State Attorney's office."
The atmosphere in the foyer instantly shifted. The ambient chatter of the wedding guests died down entirely.
Arthur Ward’s face darkened instantly. He stepped past Ryan, glaring down at me. "What did you just say, young lady? Which firm did you say you reported to?"
"Apex Holdings, Mr. Ward," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "Or should I call it what it really is? An offshore money-laundering vehicle designed to absorb stolen trust funds and convert them into real estate equity for Brooks Capital."
"You crazy bitch!" Lauren shrieked, taking a step toward me, but Caleb stepped between us, his tall frame blocking her path.
"Touch my sister," Caleb warned coldly, "and you'll be spending your wedding night in a county jail cell."
Ryan reached into his jacket, pulling out his phone, his hands shaking slightly as he attempted to dial his primary corporate attorney. "Security! Get security in here now!"
"Security won't help you, Ryan," I said, opening the leather portfolio and pulling out the single top document—the one printed on court-certified parchment paper bearing the seal of the Cook County Family Court.
I held it up directly in front of his face.

"What is that?" Ryan rasped, his eyes straining to read the text in the ambient light of the foyer.
"This is the official DNA paternity clearance issued by the state of Illinois," I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. "Confirming a 99.9% biological match between you... and the baby girl I gave birth to thirty-six hours ago."
