Chapter 5 - The Final Betrayal

The Trap at the DocksThe confrontation happened sooner than anyone expected.

The next evening, a message arrived from Marco. He had taken control of the Moretti shipping terminals in Newark, holding twenty loyal soldiers hostage. His demand was simple: Alessandro’s abdication, or the docks would blow, taking a third of the city's supply chain with it.

Alessandro didn't hesitate. He prepared his strike team, but Sophia stopped him in the courtyard.

"You're walking into a trap, Al," she said, her hands clenching his tactical vest. "Your heart... I saw your medical file on the desk. You’ve been having arrhythmias. The stress—"

"I have a daughter to live for now, Sophia," Alessandro interrupted, his hands framing her face. He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers. "And I have a woman I never stopped loving. I survived six years in hell. I will survive tonight."

The Newark docks were dark, the cranes looking like skeletal monsters against the foggy sky. Alessandro stepped into the primary warehouse alone, his hands raised, while his tactical teams moved through the shadows.

Marco stood on a raised steel catwalk, flanked by a dozen rogue soldiers. He laughed, the sound echoing hollowly off the corrugated iron walls.

"Look at the great Don Moretti," Marco mocked, his gun pointed downward. "Brought to his knees by a nurse and a bastard child."

"They aren't bastards, Marco. They are my blood," Alessandro said, his voice flat, his posture entirely relaxed despite the red laser dots painting his chest. "And you made the mistake of bringing them into the light."

"It doesn't matter," Marco sneered. "The Lucchese family has already paid me. Your empire is dead, Alessandro."

"My empire was never the syndicate, Marco," Alessandro said softly. "It was them."

Alessandro dropped to the floor just as the warehouse lights went completely black.

A devastating crossfire erupted. The flash of muzzle breaks illuminated the darkness in rhythmic, terrifying bursts. Alessandro moved like a phantom through the containers, his rage fueled by six years of stolen time. He climbed the steel stairs to the catwalk, tracking Marco through the smoke.

Click.

Marco’s gun ran empty. He turned, terrified, to see Alessandro standing before him, his face covered in soot and blood, his eyes resembling those of an avenging angel.

"Please, Al—we were brothers," Marco begged, backing up against the railing.

"Brothers don't touch my children," Alessandro said.

A single shot echoed through the warehouse. Marco tumbled backward over the railing, crashing into the dark water of the bay below.

But as the smoke cleared, Alessandro stumbled. The immense physical strain and the underlying cardiac condition caught up to him. He collapsed onto the cold steel of the catwalk, his hand clutching his chest, his breath hitching as his vision began to fade into blackness.
