Chapter 3 - The Threat Outside

Code Red on Elm StreetBefore the voice on the radio could even finish, Alessandro was on his feet. The transition from a grieving father to a military commander was instantaneous and terrifying.
"Sophia, get the kids into the hallway away from the windows. Now!" he ordered, drawing a heavy black pistol from his waistband with practiced ease.
Sophia didn't hesitate. She grabbed Emma from the table and scooped the sleeping Oliver into her arms. Both children woke up, confused and frightened, but Sophia’s clinical calm took over. "It’s a game, sweetie," she whispered to Emma, shoving them into the narrow linen closet in the center of the house. "Stay here. Don't make a sound."
Outside, the screech of tires tore through the heavy rain.
Pop. Pop. Pop.
The distinct, rhythmic sound of suppressed automatic gunfire shattered the night. Sophia covered her ears, pressing herself against the closet door as the front windows of her living room exploded inward in a shower of glittering shards.
"Get down!" Alessandro roared. He stood near the shattered doorway, returning fire with lethal precision. The deafening booms of his larger caliber weapon shook the plaster ceilings of the old house.
Sophia could hear shouting in the street, the groans of wounded men, and the terrifying sound of heavy boots stepping onto her porch. Her small, quiet sanctuary was being systematically destroyed. Six years of hiding, undone in twenty minutes of gunfire.
"They're bypassing the perimeter!" Alessandro shouted through the smoke. He slammed an empty magazine out of his gun and slapped a fresh one in. "Sophia! Is there a basement?"
"Through the kitchen! Under the stairs!" she yelled back.
"Move! Go, go!"
Sophia dragged Emma and Oliver out of the closet. They scrambled across the linoleum floor, which was now littered with broken glass and plaster dust. Alessandro moved backwards, his gun raised, providing a wall of flesh between the gunfire and his family.
They reached the basement door. Sophia threw it open, revealing a dark, steep flight of wooden steps. She guided the children down into the damp, concrete room that smelled of old paint and laundry detergent.
Alessandro slammed the heavy oak door behind them and shoved a massive metal shelving unit across it, barricading them inside. He rushed down the steps, his chest heaving, his shirt stained with drywall dust and dark splatters of blood.
"Are you hurt? Are the kids hurt?" he asked, his hands frantically checking Oliver and then, hesitantly, reaching out to touch Emma’s face.
"We’re okay," Sophia gasped, her nursing training allowing her to check her children for shock. "Al... who are these people?"
"The men who want my throne," Alessandro said, his blue-gray eyes flashing in the darkness of the basement. "They thought I was weak because I spent six years looking for you instead of killing them. Tonight, I prove them wrong. But we can't stay here. My men are neutralizing the street, but more will come. We need to go to the fortress."
Emma looked up from Sophia's lap, her small voice trembling but curious. "Are you my daddy?"
Alessandro froze. The gun in his hand suddenly looked incredibly out of place. He looked at Sophia, a silent plea for permission in his eyes. Sophia, seeing the absolute terror in her children's faces and the undeniable bond between them, slowly nodded.

Alessandro dropped his weapon onto a nearby crate and knelt before Emma. He took her small hand, the one still holding the red crayon, and kissed her knuckles.
"Yes, Emma," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I am your daddy. And I am so sorry I took so long to find you."
