Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The Bloodline RevealedThe door was closed, but the presence of the men outside remained a heavy weight against the house. Inside the small living room, the tension was thick enough to choke on.
Alessandro sat on the faded sofa, his wet coat removed and draped over a chair, revealing the tailored waistcoat underneath. Oliver was sound asleep beside him, exhausted from his ordeal, his little hand still clutching his father's sleeve. Across the room, Sophia stood in front of Emma, who was quietly coloring on the coffee table, sensing the unspoken storm between the adults.
"She’s six, Sophia," Alessandro said, his voice dangerously low, his eyes never leaving Emma’s face. "She has my nose. She has my eyes. And you left exactly six years ago."
"She’s my daughter, Alessandro," Sophia snapped, her defensive maternal instincts flaring. "You don't get to come into my home after six years and claim anything. You lost that right the night I found out what you really do."
Alessandro flinched. It was a subtle movement, but to Sophia, who knew every line of his body, it was massive. The feared don of the Moretti family looked older up close. There were threads of silver at his temples, and a deep scar ran from his jaw down into his collar—a souvenir from a war she had escaped.
"You think I didn't search for you?" Alessandro leaned forward, his hands clenching into fists. "I spent three millions dollars in the first six months alone. I tore up every borough in this city. I thought you were dead, Sophia. I thought my enemies had taken you to break me."
"Your enemies would have taken me if I stayed!" Sophia whispered fiercely, conscious of the sleeping children. "I was an ER nurse, Alessandro! I patched up a man who had been shot in a diner, fell in love with a quiet man named Al who told me he worked in construction, and three months later, I find out my boyfriend is the heir to the most brutal crime syndicate in New York. Then I missed my period. What was I supposed to do? Let my child be raised in a fortress surrounded by bodyguards and blood?"
Alessandro looked down at his daughter. Emma looked up at that exact moment, offering him a small, shy smile. The hardened criminal’s face softened so completely it looked like a mask slipping off.
"I would have protected her," he said softly. "I would have protected both of you."
"Like you protected Oliver tonight?" Sophia pointed out, her voice laced with bitter reality. "He was freezing on my porch, Alessandro. His phone was dead. He was lost in a storm. How did a four-year-old boy end up alone in Queens if your world is so safe?"
Alessandro's expression darkened instantly, the warmth vanishing, replaced by a cold, terrifying stillness.
"It wasn't an accident," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hairs on Sophia's arms stand up. "Oliver was with his nanny at a secured estate in Long Island. Three hours ago, a rogue faction of the Lucchese family hit the house. They didn't want to ransom him, Sophia. They wanted to execute him to force me to surrender my ports in Brooklyn."
Sophia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
"My security team managed to get him into an armored car, but the driver was hit," Alessandro continued, his eyes turning to flint. "Oliver must have crawled out when the car crashed near the highway. He walked through the woods and ended up on your street. He didn't just find a random house, Sophia. Out of eight million people in this city, my son walked onto the porch of the only woman who could ever keep him safe."

Suddenly, the walkie-talkie on Alessandro's belt crackled to life. A panicked voice came through the static.
“Boss, we’ve got headlights at the end of the block. Three vehicles. They aren’t ours. They’ve blocked the avenue. We are compromised!”
