Chapter 4 - The Safehouse Confrontation

Secrets in the CitadelTwo hours later, the nightmare of Elm Street was behind them, replaced by the impenetrable luxury of the Moretti estate in northern New Jersey. The property was a literal fortress—ten-foot stone walls, thermal security cameras, and thirty armed guards patrolling the grounds.
Oliver and Emma had been given a massive guest room. Exhausted from the trauma, they had fallen asleep side by side on a king-sized bed, Oliver’s arm wrapped protectively around his new older sister.
Downstairs, in a sprawling study lined with leather books and dark mahogany, a different kind of war was taking place.
"You had no right to bring us here," Sophia said, pacing back and forth in front of the massive fireplace. She had been given a clean sweater, but she still felt stained by the violence of the evening.
"I saved your lives, Sophia," Alessandro said quietly from behind his desk. He was pouring two glasses of amber liquid from a crystal decanter. He walked over and offered her one. She ignored it.
"We wouldn't have been in danger if your son hadn't knocked on my door!"
"And why did he knock on your door, Sophia?" Alessandro asked, his voice rising, the raw emotion finally breaking through his stoic facade. "Do you think it’s a coincidence? Oliver carries a GPS tracker embedded in his watch. When my security team checked the log of his route tonight, they found something impossible. Oliver didn't walk aimlessly. He was following a beacon."
Sophia stopped pacing. "What are you talking about?"
Alessandro opened a drawer and pulled out a thick, black file folder. He tossed it onto the table.
"Six years ago, when you vanished, my second-in-command, Marco, told me you had been eliminated by a rival family. He showed me a staged crime scene. He told me to forget you and focus on the syndicate. I became a monster because I thought I had nothing left to lose. I married Oliver's mother—a political alliance—and she passed away from illness a year later. But Marco... Marco kept a secret."
Sophia approached the table, her fingers touching the edge of the folder.
"Marco didn't kill you," Alessandro continued, his eyes burning with a terrifying wrath. "He hid you. He used his own resources to place you in that house in Queens. He kept you as an insurance policy. If I ever turned against him, or if he ever needed to destroy me, he had my true weakness sitting in a blue house on Elm Street. Tonight, when the Lucchese family attacked, it was Marco who gave them Oliver’s location. And it was Marco who programmed Oliver’s watch to lead him straight to your doorstep, ensuring that both of my children would be caught in the crossfire."
Sophia felt the room tilt. The quiet landlord who never raised her rent. The neighbor who always watched her house. It hadn't been luck. It had been a mafia captain keeping her fat for the slaughter.

"So we were never safe," Sophia whispered, a cold dread settling into her bones.
"No," Alessandro said, stepping closer to her, his large hands gently coming up to rest on her shoulders. For the first time in six years, Sophia didn't pull away. "But you are safe now. Because tomorrow, I am going to dismantle every man who ever dared to look at my family as a target."
