Chapter 8 - The Industrial Trap

The industrial canal at midnight was an eerie expanse of rusted shipping crates, oily black water, and fog. Inside Warehouse 14, a single halogen lamp illuminated a dusty wooden table where Connor and Charles Harrington sat, facing two men in dark leather jackets who looked like they belonged in a maximum-security prison, not a corporate office.
"The container manifests are clean," Connor said, his voice frantic as he pushed a stack of forged shipping documents across the table. "Five million in cash is all we need. The vessels are already in international waters. Once you take possession of the cargo, Apex won't be able to track them."
The older of the two men picked up the documents, flipping through them with a slow, menacing grin. "You’re selling us hot cargo, Harrington. The feds are crawling all over your company. Five million is too high. Two million, cash, right now. Take it or leave it."
"Two million?!" Charles gasped, clutching his chest. "That's insulting! That cargo is worth fifteen million!"
"You don't have leverage, old man," the criminal sneered, reaching into his jacket to reveal the butt of a heavy pistol. "You're fugitives. By tomorrow morning, your faces will be on every border patrol station in the country. Two million is more than enough for a couple of broken playboys."
"We'll take it," Connor said quickly, his panic overriding any remaining sense of pride. "Just give us the cash. We have a boat waiting down the canal."
Suddenly, the rusted metal doors of the warehouse were blown off their hinges with a deafening explosion.
Flashbangs illuminated the dark space with blinding white light, followed by the roaring commands of a tactical police unit. "Federal agents! Put your hands on your heads! Drop the weapons! Now!"
The two criminals immediately threw themselves to the floor, their weapons sliding across the concrete. Connor tried to sprint toward a rear fire exit, but a sharp red laser dot appeared directly over his chest.
"Move an inch, Mr. Harrington, and we will fire," Detective Harrison shouted, stepping through the smoke with a squad of armed officers.
Connor stopped, his hands slowly rising into the air as he let out a pathetic, broken sob. He collapsed to his knees in the dirt, looking up as Detective Ruiz stepped forward, clicking a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
From behind the police line, I walked into the warehouse, accompanied by Marcus Vance. The cold wind from the canal blew my hair across my face, but I felt completely steady.
Connor looked up at me, his eyes filled with a raw, wild hatred. "You... you did this! Vanessa would never have known about this place! You twisted her against me!"
May you like
"You twisted everyone against yourself, Connor," I said quietly, looking down at the man I had once thought I would spend my life with. "You built a life out of lies and cruelty, and you expected the world to smile and thank you for it. But the bill always comes due."
As the officers dragged Connor and Charles away into the waiting transport vans, the weight of the Harrington legacy was officially buried under the concrete of the industrial district.
