Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Lease

The sudden silence in the grand dining room of the Harrington estate was heavy, punctuated only by the rhythmic, icy drip of water falling from the hem of my emerald maternity dress onto the priceless Persian rug below.

Evelyn’s smirk slowly faltered, her hand holding the empty metal bucket lowering just an inch. "What did you just say, Brooke?" she sneered, her voice losing a bit of its polished edge. "You come into my home, uninvited, looking for a handout from my son, and you dare throw riddles at us? You’re pathetic."

"Your home?" I asked softly, my voice shockingly steady as I wiped a stray ice cube from my collarbone. I didn't stand up. I didn't need to. The sheer authority radiating from my posture made Connor shift uncomfortably in his leather-bound chair.

"Don't start, Brooke," Connor snapped, leaning forward, his face flushed red from the wine and his previous fit of laughter. "You're embarrassing yourself. Vanessa is right, you're dripping all over the floor. If you came here to beg for an extension on your alimony, the answer is no. My lawyers made it clear: you get nothing. Now get out before I have security throw you into the street."

Vanessa leaned over, patting Connor’s arm with an overly dramatic sigh. "Oh, Connor, let her stay for a minute. It’s almost sad, really. Look at her dress. It’s off-the-rack, isn't it? I suppose when you lose a wealthy man, your standards drop drastically."

I looked at Vanessa’s glittering diamond bracelet—the one Connor had purchased using a corporate expense account he thought I hadn't audited yet. I looked at Evelyn, who was now setting the bucket down on the mahogany table with an irritated huff.

"You all think I came here to beg," I murmured, reaching into my waterproof designer handbag, which had protected my documents from Evelyn’s petty assault. I pulled out a sleek, leather-bound folder, entirely dry, and placed it flat on the damp table. "Connor, three years ago, when Harrington Holdings was on the verge of bankruptcy after your disastrous shipping merger, your father desperately searched for a silent partner. Do you remember?"

Connor frowned, his eyes narrowing. "What does that have to do with you? That was a private institutional investor. Apex Vanguard Group. They bought out fifty-one percent of our debt and restructured our commercial real estate leases. It saved our company."

"And who do you think owns Apex Vanguard Group, Connor?" I asked, tilting my head.

Evelyn let out a harsh, dry laugh. "Oh, please! Are you going to claim you’re some secret billionaire now, Brooke? You were an orphan raised in a foster home! Your father didn't leave you a dime! You worked as a low-level data analyst when Connor met you!"

"I was a data analyst who built an algorithmic trading platform from my college dorm room, Evelyn," I corrected her, my voice dropping to a chillingly calm register. "A platform I sold to a Swiss banking conglomerate for four hundred and eighty million dollars six months before I met your son. I kept it in a blind trust because I foolishly believed Connor loved me for who I was, not my net worth."

The room grew so cold you could almost see your breath.

I flipped open the leather folder, revealing a certified copy of the master deed for the very property we were sitting in, alongside an immediate eviction notice stamped by the state supreme court.

"This estate doesn't belong to the Harrington family," I said, looking directly into Evelyn’s frozen eyes. "Harrington Holdings defaulted on the corporate lease back in March. Apex Vanguard purchased the deed to this house, the land, and every piece of furniture inside it. I am the sole trustee of Apex. Which means, Evelyn... you are currently trespassing in my dining room."
