Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

The morning sun hit the glass facade of the Harrington Holdings tower downtown, casting a brilliant reflection across the city skyline. But inside the executive boardroom on the top floor, the atmosphere was dark, thick with panic and the scent of stale coffee.

The remaining board members—men who had ignored me for years, men who used to look past me during corporate galas as if I were a ghost—were sitting in a state of absolute terror.

Connor sat at the foot of the table, his eyes bloodshot, his suit wrinkled from sleeping in a cheap hotel room down the street. Beside him sat his father, Charles Harrington, who had flown back from an offshore retreat the moment the news broke.

"Where is the representative from Apex Vanguard?!" Charles roared, slamming his fist on the table. "They control fifty-one percent of our voting shares! If they don't show up to vote against this emergency restructuring, the bank is going to liquidate our entire shipping fleet by noon!"

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom clicked open.

Every head snapped toward the entrance.

I walked in, wearing a sharp, tailored navy maternity suit, my hair styled perfectly, completely unrecognizable from the drenched woman they had laughed at twelve hours ago. Behind me walked Marcus Vance and a team of six forensic accountants carrying heavy leather briefcases.

Connor stood up so fast his chair tipped backward, crashing against the floor. "Brooke?! What are you doing here?! You can't just walk into a corporate board meeting!"

"Sit down, Connor," Charles snapped, glaring at his son before looking at me with a deep, suspicious frown. "Brooke, if you're here to cause a scene regarding the divorce, I suggest you leave. This is an international corporate crisis."

"I know it's a crisis, Charles," I said, walking calmly to the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the chairman of the board. I pulled back the heavy leather chair and sat down, crossing my legs comfortably. "Because I created it."

Marcus Vance stepped forward, placing a golden plaque in the center of the table that read: Apex Vanguard Group - Chief Executive Officer & Majority Stakeholder.

The silence that followed was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the city traffic sixty floors below.

"You..." Charles whispered, his face turning an ugly, bruised shade of purple. "You are Apex?"

"I am Apex, Charles," I said, tapping my fingers rhythmically against the glass table. "For the last three years, while your son was busy playing the part of a wealthy playboy and your wife was busy humiliating anyone she deemed beneath her, I was quietly buying up your corporate debt through secondary markets. Every time your company stumbled, I was there to catch you—not out of kindness, but to ensure that when the time came, I would own every single brick of your empire."
