Chapter 5 - The Price of Arrogance

"This is illegal! It’s a conflict of interest!" Connor shouted, his voice cracking with desperation. He looked around the table at the other board members, begging for support. "Someone do something! She’s using her personal vendetta to destroy our livelihood!"
Not a single board member moved. They were seasoned businessmen; they knew how to read a room. They saw the Apex Vanguard plaque, they saw the forensic accountants, and they knew that their own financial survival depended entirely on making peace with me, not defending a ruined family.
"Mr. Harrington," one of the senior board members, a man named Arthur Pendelton, said coldly. "Quiet down. Your personal life has already cost this company its reputation and its assets. If Ms. Carter is the majority stakeholder, she has the legal right to preside over this meeting."
"Thank you, Arthur," I said, offering him a polite nod. "As my first official act as chairwoman, I am introducing a motion for the immediate termination of Connor Harrington from his position as Chief Operating Officer, without severance, effective immediately."
"You can't do that!" Connor screamed, his hands slamming onto the table. "I built the logistics division!"
"You ruined the logistics division, Connor," I countered, my voice cutting through his rage like a razor blade. "You used corporate credit lines to fund your lifestyle, you falsified delivery logs to hide your margin losses, and you brought a criminal fraud investigation to our doorstep. All in favor of termination?"
Every single hand around the table went up instantly. Even Charles Harrington, after a long, agonizing pause, slowly raised his trembling hand. He was sacrificing his own son to try and save whatever scraps of his legacy remained.
Connor looked at his father, his eyes wide with a deep, sense of betrayal. "Dad... how could you?"
"He's doing what a real businessman does, Connor," I said, signing the termination papers Marcus placed in front of me. "He’s protecting his own skin. But unfortunately for both of you, it’s already too late. Marcus, please read the secondary motion."

Marcus stepped forward, opening his briefcase. "Under section 4A of the Apex restructuring agreement, Apex Vanguard hereby declares a total default on all outstanding Harrington Holdings bonds. We are initiating an immediate corporate takeover. All assets, patents, international shipping licenses, and accounts receivable are now the sole property of Apex. Harrington Holdings is officially dissolved."
Charles Harrington slumped back in his chair, his chest heaving as if he couldn't get enough air. The empire his father had built, the name that had opened doors across the country for decades, had just been wiped off the corporate map in less than five minutes.
