Chapter 6 - The Custody Trial

By the second month, Jeffrey’s legal team launched a desperate, last-ditch counterattack.
Faced with impending criminal charges for embezzlement and corporate fraud, Jeffrey’s defense attorney, a ruthless legal mercenary named Victor Vance (an uncle of Jeffrey’s), filed an emergency petition for joint parental custody and spousal support in the Fulton County Family Court.
Their strategy was clear: if Jeffrey could secure joint custody of Liam, he could argue that he needed access to Vance Holdings' trust assets to maintain the child’s standard of living, thereby delaying his criminal prosecution and halting the asset liquidation.
On a cold Tuesday morning in November, I walked into the Fulton County Courthouse.
Jeffrey sat at the defense table wearing a cheap, tailored suit he had clearly borrowed. He looked haggard—his hair thinning, dark circles under his eyes, his former smug arrogance replaced by a frantic, rat-like desperation. Cynthia sat three rows behind him in the gallery, wearing a plain dress, stripped of her luxury jewelry and designer bags.
Beside me sat Arthur Pendelton and Dr. Elizabeth Thorne, ready to present our medical testimony.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Patricia Sterling," the bailiff announced.
Judge Sterling, a formidable woman in her late fifties known for her zero-tolerance policy regarding domestic abuse, took her bench and scanned the case files before her.
"We are here in the matter of Vance v. Vance," Judge Sterling began, her voice echoing through the courtroom. "The petitioner, Mr. Jeffrey Vance, is seeking joint legal and physical custody of the minor child, Liam Vance, along with temporary spousal maintenance from Mrs. Madeline Vance."
Victor Vance stood up, smoothing his jacket. "Your Honor, my client is the biological father of Liam. Mrs. Vance voluntarily abandoned the marital home for two years to pursue financial ambitions in Europe. While away, my client did his best as a single father to raise their son. The allegations of neglect are wildly exaggerated by Mrs. Vance to gain leverage in corporate restructuring."
I sat perfectly still, my hands resting calmly on the table.
Arthur Pendelton stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, if it pleases the court, we would like to present three pieces of evidence before any discussion of custody takes place."
"Proceed, Mr. Pendelton," Judge Sterling nodded.
Arthur submitted the first file. "Document One: A certified medical evaluation from St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, signed by Dr. Elizabeth Thorne, documenting severe physical trauma, muscle atrophy consistent with prolonged physical restraint, and acute malnutrition."
Victor Vance jumped up. "Objection! Those injuries could have occurred after Mrs. Vance returned!"
"Overruled," Judge Sterling snapped. "Sit down, Mr. Vance. Continue, Mr. Pendelton."
"Document Two," Arthur continued, turning on a audio player on our table. "An authenticated audio recording taken at the marital residence on the evening of October 14th."
The clear, high-definition audio filled the courtroom:
Noelle's voice: "Don't let that boy sit at the table. He's gotten used to eating on the floor." Cynthia's voice: "Look at him, Jeffrey. He's acting like a wild animal again." Jeffrey's voice: "Keep him away from Austin. He'll scare him."
In the gallery, Cynthia buried her face in her hands. Jeffrey slumped forward, staring at the desk as if trying to disappear into the wood.
Judge Sterling’s expression turned into something terrifying. Her eyes locked onto Jeffrey with absolute disgust. "Mr. Vance... is that your voice on the recording?"
Jeffrey stammered, unable to speak. "I... Your Honor... it was taken out of context..."
"Out of context?" Judge Sterling barked, slamming her gavel down with a deafening crack. "You left your four-year-old child under a table while entertaining your mistress and your mother! You referred to your own son as a wild animal!"
Arthur wasn't finished. "And Document Three, Your Honor: An official indictment from the District Attorney’s office charging Mr. Jeffrey Vance, Mrs. Noelle Vance, and Miss Cynthia Miller with felony child endangerment, corporate embezzlement, and grand larceny."
Judge Sterling closed the folder with a sharp snap.
"I have seen enough," Judge Sterling declared, her voice cold as ice. "Effective immediately, Mr. Jeffrey Vance’s parental rights regarding Liam Vance are suspended without possibility of reinstatement. A permanent, lifetime restraining order is issued against Mr. Vance, Mrs. Noelle Vance, and Miss Cynthia Miller."
Jeffrey let out a choked gasp. "Your Honor, please! You can't take my son away!"

"You surrendered your right to be called a father the day you allowed your child to be treated like vermin in his own home," Judge Sterling ruled sternly. "Furthermore, this court orders the immediate seizure of all remaining personal assets held by the respondent to pay for the victim's ongoing medical and psychological care. Custody is awarded solely and permanently to Mrs. Madeline Vance."
The gavel struck the sound block. It was over.
