Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 9:00 AM on Monday morning, the glass doors of Vance Holdings’ corporate headquarters in downtown Atlanta swung open.
Jeffrey was sitting at the head of the conference table, sipping an espresso and reviewing the quarterly projections. Cynthia sat right beside him, holding a position as "Senior Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy"—a title Jeffrey had fabricated for her three months after I left for Europe.
"Where are the European revenue figures?" Jeffrey barked at the head accountant sitting at the end of the table. "Madeline was supposed to send the final audit from the London office before she landed."
"She didn't send them to you, Jeffrey," a voice echoed from the doorway.
The boardroom fell completely silent.
I walked into the room wearing an ivory-white power suit, my hair styled in sharp, immaculate waves, flanked by Arthur Pendelton and three forensic accountants from Deloitte. Behind us stood two uniformed officers from the Fulton County Sheriff's Department.
Jeffrey scoffed, though his hand shook slightly as he set his espresso cup down. "Madeline? What is this circus? You walked out of my house on Saturday night, and now you bring cops to my executive meeting? Stop making a fool of yourself."
Cynthia leaned back in her leather chair, crossing her legs with a smirk. "Madeline, sweetie, this is a private board meeting for voting shareholders. You may hold an executive title, but you don't have a seat at this table anymore. Jeffrey revoked your administrative access on Friday."
"He tried to," Arthur Pendelton interjected, tossing a thick blue file onto the center of the glass table. "Unfortunately for Mr. Vance, his corporate revocations were filed using fraudulent power-of-attorney documents forged while Mrs. Vance was abroad."
Jeffrey’s face lost its color. "Forged? What the hell are you talking about?!"
"Page twelve," Arthur said smoothly. "Your secretary, Cynthia Miller, signed Madeline’s name to the corporate proxy release three months ago. That is a federal felony, Mr. Vance."
"That’s nonsense!" Cynthia shouted, jumping to her feet, her composure cracking. "Jeffrey authorized it! He told me to sign!"
"Which makes him a co-conspirator to corporate fraud," I said, stepping closer to the table, leaning both hands on the mahogany surface as I looked straight into Jeffrey’s eyes. "But that's just the appetizer, Jeffrey."
I signaled to the chief forensic accountant, who opened a laptop and projected a financial spreadsheet onto the wall screen behind Jeffrey.
"Over the last twenty-four months," I announced to the silent board members, "Jeffrey Vance embezzled six point two million dollars from the European expansion fund. He funneled it through four shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands to buy Cynthia a luxury villa in St. Thomas, three sports cars, and a high-end wardrobe."
The board members began to whisper frantically among themselves. The Vice President of Finance stood up, pointing an angry finger at Jeffrey. "Jeffrey! Is this true?! That money was supposed to cover our Q3 bond repayments!"
"She's lying!" Jeffrey shouted, standing up so fast his chair rolled back into the glass wall. "She's mad because I'm divorcing her! She's trying to ruin me!"
"Apex Capital has called in your fifteen-million-dollar loan, effective immediately," Arthur stated calmly. "As the sole guarantor, your personal assets, including your accounts, cars, and real estate, are frozen pending judicial liquidation. The sheriff officers are here to escort you off the premises."
The two officers stepped forward, placing their hands on their belts. "Mr. Vance, step away from the desk, please."
Cynthia grabbed her designer handbag, trying to slide toward the side exit, but one of the officers stepped directly into her path. "Miss Miller, you are also required to stay. Federal investigators are waiting in the lobby to question you regarding the forged financial documents."
Jeffrey looked around the room, his eyes wild with panic. The board members he had treated like lackeys for two years looked back at him with pure coldness. Cynthia was trembling, looking at him not with love, but with venomous blame.

"Madeline... please," Jeffrey whispered, his voice cracking as he looked at me, stepping around the table. "We can talk about this! Think about our family! Think about Liam!"
"Don't you dare say my son's name," I hissed, my voice low enough so only he could hear it. "You left him under a table to starve while you played house with your mistress. You are going to lose everything, Jeffrey. And I am going to watch every single second of it."
