Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Noelle

While Jeffrey was being stripped of his corporate authority at Vance Holdings, I drove straight to the Buckhead mansion accompanied by a team of private security guards, a locksmith, and a representative from the local social services division.

The iron gates opened, and my SUV pulled up the circular driveway.

Inside the house, Noelle was sitting in the formal parlor, sipping tea from fine china while little Austin played with an expensive wooden train set on the velvet rug. She looked up, startled, as the heavy front doors were pushed open and my team stepped into the foyer.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?!" Noelle demanded, standing up and setting her teacup down with a sharp clatter. "Madeline! How dare you bring strangers into my home!"

"This isn't your home, Noelle," I said, walking into the parlor with my arms crossed. "The deed is registered under Apex Capital. You have two hours to pack your personal belongings and leave."

Noelle’s mouth opened in outrage. "You arrogant little girl! This is my son's estate! I have lived here for three years!"

"You lived here on my sweat and tears while I worked in London," I corrected coldly. "And while you lived here, you systematically starved, abused, and neglected my four-year-old child."

"He was unruly!" Noelle spat, her face twisting into a mask of cruel arrogance. "He inherited your low-class blood! He was a nuisance to this family! I did what was necessary to teach him his place!"

"And now I'm going to teach you yours," I said softly.

The social services representative, a sharp-eyed woman named Sarah Jenkins, stepped forward holding a clipboard. "Mrs. Noelle Vance, I am an officer of the court. We have reviewed medical records from St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital documenting severe malnutrition, physical bruising, and psychological trauma inflicted on Liam Vance while under your care."

Noelle turned pale, taking a step back toward the sofa. "I... I was just disciplining him! Parents and grandparents have a right to discipline children!"

"Holding a child under a table, forcing him to eat off the floor, and striking him with a wooden ruler is not discipline, Mrs. Vance," Sarah replied coldly. "It is felony child abuse. A warrant has been issued for your questioning."

Two female police officers stepped through the parlor entrance.

Noelle let out a dramatic, high-pitched shriek as the officers moved in to seize her arms. "Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?! I am Noelle Vance! My family founded the Atlanta Country Club!"

"Your family's money is gone, Noelle," I said, standing right in front of her as the handcuffs clicked tightly around her thin wrists. "Jeffrey’s accounts are frozen. The house is seized. And your little grandson Austin?" I looked down at the toddler, who was watching his grandmother with wide, confused eyes. "Cynthia’s mother has been contacted to collect him. He won't be raised by a monster."

"You evil bitch!" Noelle screamed, her face contorting with rage as the officers dragged her toward the front entrance. "You ruined my son! You ruined our family!"

"You ruined yourselves the day you decided my son's life didn't matter," I called out after her as the heavy mahogany doors slammed shut, leaving the grand mansion completely silent.

I walked through the quiet house, stopping at the dining room. I looked down at the dark space beneath the table where my sweet little boy had been forced to live like a stray animal.

I knelt down, reached under the table, and pulled out a small, broken plastic toy car that Liam had left behind.

I squeezed the toy tightly in my hand, tears stinging my eyes. "It's over, baby," I whispered to the empty room. "Mommy cleaned the house."
