Chapter 4 - The Debt of a Billionaire

With Vivian in custody, Elias focused on the boy in the ICU. Noah was waking up, and he was terrified. He kept asking for the "girl with the candy."
Elias brought Maya into the room. The change in Noah was instantaneous. The monitors, which had been erratic, smoothed out. The boy’s hand reached out, small and pale, and Maya took it. She didn't say a word. She just sat there, acting as the anchor that held Noah to the world.
Elias watched from the doorway. He realized he had been looking at Maya as a "case" to be solved, a witness to be interrogated. He hadn't seen the human being.
"She has nowhere to go, Elias," Dr. Reed said, walking up beside him. "The father she talked about... we found him. He’s a career criminal. If she goes back to the system, she’ll be back on the streets within a month. She’s too resilient for the foster care system; she’ll just keep running."
Elias nodded. He walked into the room. "Maya?"
She looked at him.
"I can't pay you back for what you did," Elias said, his voice thick. "But I can give you a choice. I want to take you in. Not as a guest, but as my daughter. I want to give you a life where you never have to sell a box of candy again."

Maya looked at Noah, then back at Elias. "Why? Because you feel guilty?"
"No," Elias said, realizing it was true. "Because I don't know how to raise a son without knowing how to be a father. And you... you already know more about being a sister than I know about being a man."
