Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the Garden

The following forty-eight hours were a symphony of bureaucracy and terror. Elias kept Maya in the hospital under the protection of his private security detail. He couldn't reconcile the girl’s story with Vivian’s version of events.
"She’s lying, Elias," Vivian whispered in the sterile, dimly lit waiting room. She touched his arm, her diamond ring catching the fluorescent light. "That girl is clearly a kidnapper. Look at her—she’s a street rat. She probably drugged him to steal his watch and then panicked when he collapsed."
Elias looked at Maya, who was sitting in a corner, clutching the candy box. She was staring at a wall, her expression closed off.
"I saw her, Elias," Vivian insisted. "I saw her talking to a man in a black car near the park exit. She was handing him something."
Elias stood up, his legs feeling like lead. He walked over to Maya. "Maya, look at me."
She looked up. Her eyes were older than any child’s should be.
"Vivian says you were talking to a man in a black car," Elias said. "Tell me the truth. You don't have to be afraid of me."
Maya leaned forward, her voice a ghost of a sound. "I saw a man in a black car, Mr. Westbrook. But he wasn't talking to me. He was talking to her. She gave him a bag. It looked heavy. And then she walked away while Noah was lying in the grass. She didn't even look back."
Vivian’s face contorted. "You little liar!"
May you like
"Enough!" Elias thundered. The sound echoed through the hospital corridor, causing nurses to flinch. "I want full access to the park’s security footage. Now. And Vivian—you stay in this waiting room. Do not move."
Elias walked away, his heart hammering against his ribs. He felt the cold, creeping realization that the woman he had intended to marry was a stranger, and the girl he had been ready to jail was the only reason his son was still breathing.
