Chapter 2 - The Fortress of Glass

The private wing of the St. Jude Medical Center was dead silent, save for the rhythmic, metallic hum of the diagnostic monitors surrounding my bed.
The initial spinal scans had brought a grim reality: the fall had caused severe trauma to my lumbar vertebrae, resulting in temporary paralysis. The doctors couldn't guarantee if I would ever walk again. It would take months of intensive, agonizing physical therapy just to have a chance.
But while my body was broken, my mind had never been sharper. The multi-million-dollar Sterling estate wasn't just cash; it included the controlling shares of Sterling International, the global logistics empire my grandmother had built from scratch. By trying to break my spine, Tyler and Eleanor had officially declared a war they were entirely unprepared to fight.
The door to my private suite clicked open. Detective Vance walked in, followed by a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a tactical jacket and carrying a rugged, military-grade laptop.
It was Marcus.
"Julian," Marcus said, his voice deep and gravelly as he bowed his head respectfully. "I deeply regret that I couldn't catch you before you went over that railing. Tyler had cut the power to the western deck cameras, and I was delayed navigating the breaker room."
"Did you secure the backup servers, Marcus?" I asked, my voice steady despite the heavy pain medication pumping through my IV line.
"I did," Marcus replied, opening the laptop and spinning it toward me. "Your grandmother didn't just leave you the wealth, Julian. She left you the vault. When Tyler shoved you, my automated system locked down every single corporate account, offshore trust, and residential deed tied to the Sterling name. Right now, your mother and brother are sitting in a multi-million-dollar mansion where they can't even authorize a ten-dollar bank transfer."
The door burst open violently before Marcus could finish.
Eleanor stepped into the room, flanked by the family’s high-priced corporate attorney, Arthur Pendelton. Her face was flushed with an ugly, toxic rage, all remnants of her high-society elegance completely gone.
"You ungrateful little monster!" Eleanor shrieked, pointing an accusatory finger at my hospital bed. "Tyler is currently being held at the precinct for questioning! The board of directors is panicking because our corporate credit lines have been frozen! Sign the emergency authorization forms to release the trust control to me immediately!"
Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, adjusting his glasses, trying to project a calm, legal authority. "Julian, as your legal representative prior to this unfortunate event, I strongly advise you to sign these documents. If the corporate stock crashes due to this family dispute, your inheritance will be worth nothing."
I looked at the attorney, then at the mother who had told me to stop making a scene while I lay paralyzed on river rocks.
"You aren't my attorney anymore, Arthur," I said, a cold, humorless smile appearing on my face. "You were fired the moment you helped Tyler falsify the previous estate amendments while grandmother was on her deathbed."
Eleanor gasped, her hands shaking. "You have no proof of that!"

"We have the full audio logs from the estate’s private library, Mrs. Sterling," Detective Vance spoke up, stepping out from the shadows near the window, his hand resting casually near his service weapon. "Along with the digital signature trail showing Arthur’s personal IP address accessing the server illegally. Your corporate immunity has officially expired."
"Get out of my room, Eleanor," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that echoed clearly through the sterile air. "The next time you see me, it will be across a courtroom. And I promise you, I won't be the one making a scene."
