Chapter 1 - The Chilling Query

The flashing red and blue lights of the ambulance cast long, jagged shadows across the jagged river rocks below the Sterling family’s sprawling estate. The air was thick with the scent of damp moss, crisp mountain air, and the underlying rot of a family’s deepest betrayal.
I lay perfectly still on the cold, unforgiving stone, my breath coming in shallow, agonizing gasps. My lower body felt completely disconnected, a terrifying, weightless void where my legs should have been.
Just a few feet away, my mother, Eleanor Sterling, stood adjusting her expensive emerald ring, her face a mask of calculated indifference. My brother, Tyler, paced frantically behind her, his hands buried deep in the pockets of his designer jacket, sweat dripping down his temple despite the evening chill.
"Stop making a scene and get up, Julian," Eleanor had whispered only minutes earlier, her voice a poisonous thread of ice. "You've always been dramatic. Tyler just pushed you playfully. Do you have any idea what a police report would do to your brother's upcoming hedge fund launch?"
But their carefully constructed wall of excuses began to crumble the moment the lead detective stepped out of the unmarked black sedan.
Detective Vance was a towering man with sharp, predatory grey eyes and a long scar cutting through his left eyebrow. He completely ignored Eleanor’s outstretched hand and Tyler’s stammered attempts at an explanation. Instead, he scanned the perimeter of the riverbank, his gaze locking onto the high wooden deck towering thirty feet above us.
He turned slowly, facing my trembling family, and dropped the question that froze the blood in their veins:
“Where’s Marcus?”
Eleanor’s aristocratic composure fractured for a fraction of a second. "Marcus? I... I don't know what you mean, Detective. Marcus is just a low-level security guard we hired to patrol the perimeter. He has nothing to do with my son Julian’s tragic, clumsy accident."
"This wasn't an accident, Mrs. Sterling," Detective Vance said, pulling a secure, military-grade digital tablet from his trench coat. "And Marcus isn't a security guard. His real name is Marcus Vance. He’s a retired Special Forces communications specialist, and more importantly, he’s my brother."
Tyler let out a sharp, panicked breath, his knees visibly buckling. "Your... your brother?"
"Three weeks ago, your late grandmother, Abigail Sterling, hired Marcus privately," Detective Vance explained, stepping directly into Tyler’s personal space. "She knew her family was a pack of wolves. She gave Marcus strict instructions: if anything sudden or violent happened to Julian after her passing, Marcus was to immediately activate a secure, encrypted digital dead-man's switch. That switch triggered five minutes ago when Julian hit these rocks."
Detective Vance walked over to where the paramedics were gently stabilizing my neck. He knelt beside me, his tough face softening just a fraction. "Julian, can you hear me?"

"I... I can't feel my legs," I choked out, a single tear escaping into my hairline.
"Hold on, son," Vance said, his voice dropping into a deep, lethal register as he stood back up to face my mother. "Marcus is already securing the primary evidence. As for the rest of you... the Sterling name isn't going to save you from what's coming next."
