Chapter 7 - The Final Trap

Dominic Cross sat on the edge of a stained mattress in a damp, dark motel room on the south side of Chicago. The room smelled of old tobacco and cheap disinfectant. His tailored suits were gone, replaced by a faded sweatshirt and worn jeans. His phone, which once buzzed with calls from prominent medical executives, now held only automated alerts from his bank showing a balance of twelve dollars.

Suddenly, a sharp knock cut through the silence of the room.

Dominic jumped up, his heart racing with sudden panic. He thought it was the FBI coming to execute the arrest warrant he had been terrified of for days. He slowly opened the door, his hands shaking.

Standing outside in the pouring rain was Victoria Sterling. She held a black umbrella, her expression as sharp and cold as shattered ice. Beside her stood two massive Vance security officers.

"Dominic," Victoria said, her voice dripping with artificial politeness. "May I come in?"

"What... what do you want?" Dominic stammered, backing away into the small room. "You’ve already taken everything! My company is gone! My apartment is gone! Natalie left me! What else could you possibly want from me?!"

Victoria stepped inside, the security guards closing the door behind her, turning the small room into a claustrophobic interrogation cell. She pulled a single document from her leather briefcase and laid it on the worn wooden table.

"This is the final settlement agreement for your criminal wire fraud charges, Dominic," Victoria explained, pointing a manicured finger at the signature line. "The federal prosecutors have agreed to drop the maximum twenty-year prison sentence to a mandatory five-year term in a minimum-security facility, on one condition."

Dominic looked at the paper, his eyes wide with a desperate, wild hope. "What condition? I’ll sign it! Anything!"

"You will sign a full, permanent waiver of all parental rights to Liam and Chloe Vance," Victoria said, her voice dropping all traces of warmth, becoming deadly serious. "You will legally declare that you have no relation to them, no right to ever see them, speak to them, or come within one thousand miles of them for the rest of your natural life. You will also forfeit any future claims to the Vance family estate or any trust funds associated with Audrey."

Dominic stared at the document. For a fraction of a second, a small shred of his old pride tried to resist. "They are my children... they carry my name..."

"They do not carry your name, Dominic," Victoria cut him off sharply. "Audrey legally changed their birth certificates two weeks ago. Their names are Liam Vance and Chloe Vance. If you refuse to sign this waiver, I will personally ensure the federal prosecutor upgrades your charges to corporate racketeering and attempted grand larceny involving a military-grade medical supply supplier. You will spend the next twenty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. Choose wisely."

Dominic looked at the bleak walls of the motel room, then at the massive security guards standing by the door. The reality of his complete, absolute defeat finally crushed the last remaining ounce of his spirit.

With a shaking hand, he picked up a cheap plastic pen from the table and scribbled his signature across the document, signing away his children, his past, and any hope of a future.

Victoria Sterling picked up the paper, checked the signature with a satisfied smile, and slid it back into her briefcase. "Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Cross. Your escort to the federal holding facility is waiting outside."

As the guards stepped forward to place the heavy iron handcuffs around Dominic's wrists, he looked out the window one last time, realizing that the woman he had called "nothing" had completely erased him from existence.
