Chapter 6 - The Fight for Breath

Three weeks passed, and the battlefield shifted from the corporate world back to the quiet, sacred space of the neonatal intensive care unit.
While Dominic’s company was being systematically dismantled by federal receivers, Audrey spent every single hour of her days and nights inside the Vance private medical pavilion. She had undergone a complete recovery from her surgery, her strength fully returned, but her heart was still tied to the twin incubators.
Little Liam and Chloe were fighting bravely. They had gained a few ounces, their fragile skin looking healthier, but they were still dependent on specialized respiratory machines to help their underdeveloped lungs process oxygen.
Audrey sat between the two incubators, her hands slid through the round rubber portals, gently resting her fingertips against her babies' tiny feet. She sang to them softly, her voice a soothing contrast to the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitors.
"They are doing remarkably well, Miss Vance," Dr. Harrison said, walking into the room with a warm, encouraging smile. "Their lung development has accelerated over the last week. The new surfactant therapy we brought in from Germany—thanks to your grandfather's foundation—is working miracles. We expect to take them off the ventilators by the end of the month."
Audrey let out a long, deep breath, her eyes shining with tears of pure gratitude. "Thank you, Dr. Harrison. Thank you for saving them."
"We just provided the medicine, Audrey," the doctor replied gently. "Their mother provided the strength. Premature babies can sense the emotional state of their environment. The fact that you stayed calm, that you removed the toxicity from their lives from day one... that is what saved them."
The door opened, and Arthur Vance walked in, carrying a large plush blanket and a basket of fresh pastries from Audrey’s favorite bakery. He looked down at the twin incubators, a rare, soft smile breaking through his stern features.
"My legal team just informed me, Audrey," Arthur said, pulling up a chair beside her. "Dominic’s company has officially declared total default. The banks have seized his office building, and his luxury cars are being auctioned off tomorrow morning to pay the legal fees he owes to our corporate subsidiaries."
Audrey looked at her grandfather. "And Natalie?"
"She left him two days ago," Arthur chuckled darkly. "The moment she realized there was no money left to steal, she packed her bags and moved back to her parents' house in Indiana. Dominic is currently living in a cheap, one-room motel on the outskirts of the city, working a low-wage job just to pay for his food. The FBI is expected to issue his formal arrest warrant for wire fraud by the end of the week."

Audrey turned back to her babies, a profound sense of closure settling over her soul. The man who had stood over her with a tailored suit and a stolen cashmere coat, telling her she was nothing, had been reduced to the exact nothingness he had tried to inflict on her.
"Let him stay in that motel room for now, Papa," Audrey said softly, her thumb gently stroking Chloe’s tiny hand. "He has a lot of time to think about the names of the children he abandoned."
