Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Monarch

The silence that settled over the private NICU cubicle was heavier than the sterile air itself. Dominic’s hand froze mid-air as he reached for the signed divorce folder. The smug, self-satisfied grin that had been plastered across his face for the last twenty minutes twitched, his eyes darting from Audrey’s calm face to the glowing screen of her phone.

Natalie shifted uncomfortably beside him, the ivory cashmere of Audrey’s maternity coat rustling loudly against the quiet hum of the infant incubators.

"What did you just say?" Dominic sneered, though his voice lacked the absolute certainty it had possessed moments ago. He tried to force a scoff, adjusting the cuffs of his charcoal suit jacket. "A hospital I own? Audrey, the medication from the delivery has clearly rotted your brain. St. Aurelia is a private, multi-billion-dollar medical research facility owned by the Vance-Vanderbilt Conglomerate. You couldn't even afford the parking deck down downstairs without my credit cards."

Audrey didn't look at him. Her gaze remained fixed on the twin incubators where Liam and Chloe lay, their tiny chests rising and falling under the watchful eye of the heart monitors. "I suggested you check the spelling of your own daughter's name on those documents, Dominic. But you were too busy calculating how much money you stole from our joint checking account."

"It wasn't stealing, it was asset protection," Dominic snapped, his temper flaring as he stepped closer to her chair, his shadow falling over her frail, post-surgery body. "You signed the papers. It's legally binding. You get nothing. You're a penniless orphan, remember? That 'family trust' you bragged about when we met couldn't even cover the deposit on a secondhand sedan."

Natalie nodded eagerly, her manicured hand stroking her pregnant belly through the stolen coat. "Exactly, Dominic. Let’s just leave. She’s trying to stall because she has nowhere to go. The smell of bleach in here is giving me a headache anyway."

"Don't move," a voice boomed from the doorway.

It wasn't a shout, but the absolute, vibrating resonance of the tone made Dominic’s shoulders lock instantly.

Standing in the entrance of the NICU cubicle was Arthur Vance. At seventy-two years old, the patriarch of the Vance empire looked less like a retired businessman and more like an ancient monarch who had just walked off a battlefield. He wore a traditional bespoke navy trench coat over a perfectly tailored dark suit. Behind him stood four elite security operatives dressed in identical black suits, their faces expressionless, and the Chief Medical Officer of Saint Aurelia, Dr. Harrison, who was visibly trembling.

Dominic’s jaw dropped. As the owner of a mid-tier medical supply company, he spent half his life trying to get a glance of Arthur Vance at corporate galas. He had pictures of this man pinned to his office vision board.

"Mr... Mr. Vance," Dominic stammered, his aristocratic arrogance vanishing as he instinctively stepped away from Natalie, trying to present himself as a professional. "I... I had no idea you were touring the facility today. I'm Dominic Cross, CEO of Cross Medical Supplies. We actually submitted a bid for your hospital's orthopedic contract—"

Arthur Vance didn't even blink in Dominic's direction. His sharp, flint-grey eyes scanned the room until they found Audrey sitting in the low hospital chair, her face pale but her posture unbroken.

The terrifying billionaire instantly vanished. Arthur rushed forward, dropping his leather cane to the floor, and knelt directly beside Audrey's chair, taking her cold hands into his massive, trembling palms.

"Audrey," the old man whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion that shocked the medical staff standing by the door. "My beautiful girl. Look at you. The doctors told me what happened during the delivery... I took a private jet from London the moment the secure alert triggered. Why didn't you call me months ago?"

Audrey managed a weak, heartbreaking smile, a tear finally escaping her eye. "You always said, Papa... let a man believe you have nothing, and he will show you exactly who he is."

Arthur’s face hardened, the warmth in his eyes instantly replaced by a lethal, predatory coldness as he slowly rose to his full height. He turned to face Dominic and Natalie, his presence completely suffocating the small room.

"So," Arthur Vance said, his voice dropping to a register that made Dominic’s knees shake. "You are the insect who thought he could starve my granddaughter while she fought for her life."
