Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of the Ivory Tower

Within thirty minutes of Dominic’s eviction, the atmosphere of the NICU changed entirely. Under the personal supervision of Dr. Harrison, Liam and Chloe were gently moved inside their state-of-the-art incubators to the penthouse level of Saint Aurelia—a restricted, high-security private pavilion reserved exclusively for the Vance family.
The room was vast, filled with warm, soft lighting, comfortable leather sofas, and an adjacent private suite for Audrey, complete with a specialized post-operative care team. The medical equipment here was the most advanced in the world, ensuring the premature twins had the absolute best chance of survival.
Audrey lay in the plush automated hospital bed, a warm compression blanket over her abdomen. Her grandfather sat in a chair beside her, peeling a fresh orange, his face lined with deep exhaustion but his eyes filled with absolute devotion.
"You should have told me, Audrey," Arthur said softly, placing a slice of fruit on a small plate near her hand. "When he started pulling away six months ago... when he stopped letting you visit the family estate for holidays. I thought you were just busy with the pregnancy. If I had known he was isolating you..."
"I was ashamed, Papa," Audrey whispered, looking out the massive window at the Chicago skyline. "I wanted so badly to believe that I had chosen correctly. I wanted to prove that someone could love me just for being Audrey, not because I'm the heiress to the Vance fortune. When he started changing, when the mistress showed up... I felt like a failure."
"A failure?" Arthur slammed his hand lightly on the armrest, his voice filled with protective rage. "The only failure here is that miserable worm who couldn't see the diamond he had in his hands. You have nothing to be ashamed of. You survived a high-risk delivery, you protected my great-grandchildren, and you gave me the legal ammunition I need to bury him alive."
The door to the suite opened quietly, and an elegant woman in a sharp gray pantsuit walked in. It was Victoria Sterling, the chief legal counsel for the Vance family empire, known in the corporate world as the "White Shark."
"Mr. Vance, Miss Audrey," Victoria said, bowing her head respectfully as she laid a thick manila folder on the table. "The initial financial sweep is complete. Dominic Cross truly believed he was a criminal mastermind. While you were pregnant, Audrey, he shifted four million dollars from your joint family trust account into a shell company registered under Natalie’s name in Delaware."
Audrey’s eyes narrowed. "He thought the trust was just a standard civilian account. He didn't realize it had an automated federal monitoring flag on it."
"Exactly," Victoria smiled, a cold, predatory expression. "Because the trust is technically part of the Vance family corporate banking network, his unauthorized transfer constitutes interstate wire fraud and grand larceny. The FBI has already been notified. They are currently opening a formal investigation into his corporate accounts."
Arthur let out a dark chuckle. "What about his business?"
"Cross Medical Supplies is currently in a state of absolute freefall," Victoria reported. "We executed the supply chain termination at 11:00 AM. Without our manufacturing plants, Dominic has no inventory to fulfill his orders for the major city hospitals. By tomorrow morning, his clients will begin filing breach-of-contract lawsuits against him. His company's valuation has already dropped by 80% in the last four hours."
Audrey looked at the ultrasound pictures of her babies taped to the side of her bed. The fear that had kept her silent for the last three months was completely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating determination.

"He told me to call a shelter, Victoria," Audrey said, her voice dropping all traces of vulnerability. "He told me my children and I were on our own. I want him to feel exactly what that means. Don't let him file for bankruptcy. Keep the debts active. I want him to owe every single penny until the day he dies."
"Consider it done, Miss Audrey," Victoria replied with a sharp nod.
