Chapter 8 - The Falling Empire

The jury deliberation took less than two hours.
When the verdict was read, Eleanor Vance was found guilty on all counts—attempted first-degree murder, child endangerment, forgery, and corporate financial fraud. The judge, a severe man who refused to be swayed by the remnants of the Vance political influence, sentenced Eleanor to twenty-five years in a maximum-security state prison, with no possibility of parole until she served at least eighty percent of her sentence.
As the bailiffs stepped forward to place the metal handcuffs around Eleanor’s wrinkled wrists, she looked over at Arthur, a single tear cutting through her heavy makeup.
“Arthur… please,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I am your mother. You can't let them take me to that place. I won't survive a week there.”
Arthur stood up from his seat in the gallery. He walked down to the wooden railing, stopping just inches from her. His face was calm, peaceful, but completely detached.
“You died to me the night you put that blade near my son’s wrist, Eleanor,” Arthur said softly. “You aren't my mother anymore. You’re just a person who faces the consequences of her own choices.”
Eleanor let out a sharp, ragged gasp as she was led out of the courtroom through the secure rear doors, her heels clicking weakly against the linoleum floor until the sound disappeared completely into the dark holding cells below.
Outside the courthouse, the media swarmed Clara and Arthur. Microphones were thrust into Clara’s face from every direction.
“Mrs. Vance! What is the future of the Vance Group now that Eleanor is gone?” a reporter shouted.

Clara looked at the cameras, her hand resting on Arthur’s arm. “The Vance Group is changing its name effective tomorrow. It will now be known as the Vance-Salazar Global Initiative. We are liquidating eighty percent of the luxury real estate portfolio to fund the construction of free, high-security shelters and legal defense networks for victims of domestic and systemic psychological abuse across the country.”
Clara smiled, a radiant, genuine expression that captured the hearts of millions watching the live broadcast. “We are turning a legacy of cruelty into a future of hope. Thank you.”
