Chapter 3 - The Doctor's Secret

The rain pounded against the glass windows of the Sterling Psychiatric Institute, a fortress-like luxury facility hidden behind high stone walls in the wealthy suburbs of Chicago. To the public, it was a retreat where the ultra-wealthy went to recover from "exhaustion." To Clara, it looked like the prison Eleanor had custom-built for her.

At 2:00 AM, a black SUV pulled up to the rear service entrance of the clinic. Marcus Vance stepped out first, holding a large umbrella, followed by Arthur and Clara, who had left baby Leo under the tight security of Marcus’s most trusted guards back at the hotel.

“Are you sure about this, Marcus?” Arthur whispered, looking up at the security cameras lining the stone walls. “This is breaking and entering. If we get caught, Eleanor’s lawyers will use this to paint us as criminals.”

“We aren't breaking in,” Marcus said with a dark smirk, pulling a digital keycard from his pocket. “The night shift security supervisor here used to be my junior partner in the police department. He owes me his life. We have twenty minutes before the system does an automated network reboot.”

The keycard clicked, and the heavy metal door swung open. The interior of the clinic was suffocatingly clean—polished white floors, soft ambient lighting, and the eerie, dead silence of a facility meant to keep secrets buried.

They moved quickly through the corridors, guided by Marcus’s tactical precision, until they reached the grand corner office of Dr. Julian Sterling. The office was decorated with expensive leather, rare mahogany wood, and framed diplomas from Ivy League universities.

Arthur immediately went to the desk, turning on his encrypted flash drive to copy the desktop files, while Clara walked over to the massive wall of filing cabinets.

“Look for files labeled under the Vance Family estate,” Clara muttered, her fingers flying through the tabs. “Not my name. She wouldn't put my name on the main file. Look for something labeled 'Project Clean Slate.'”

“How do you know that name?” Arthur asked, looking over.

“I found a crumpled piece of notepad paper in Eleanor’s guest room last month,” Clara said, her jaw tightening at the memory. “It had that phrase written next to Dr. Sterling’s private phone number. I thought it was just a business venture.”

“Found it,” Marcus called out from the corner of the room. He wasn't looking at the filing cabinets. He had pulled back a heavy oil painting of a landscape scene, revealing a small, high-tech biometric safe built into the wall.

“Marcus, that’s a biometric lock,” Arthur said, frustrated. “We don't have his thumbprint.”

“We don't need it,” Marcus said. He pulled a small, aerosol can from his tactical vest and sprayed a clear liquid over the keypad. He then pulled out a specialized blue-light laser. “Dr. Sterling is a creature of habit. He uses the same five-digit code for his safe as his private elevator override. The oils from his skin leave a distinct thermal signature under this light.”

Within ninety seconds, the safe clicked open with a soft hiss.

Inside was a single, thick leather binder stamped with the Vance family crest. Clara reached in and pulled it open. As her eyes scanned the first page, the breath completely left her lungs.

It wasn't just a file about her. It was a comprehensive, multi-year medical conspiracy execution plan.

The documents detailed a systematic plan to slowly poison Clara using micro-doses of a synthetic hormone called Postpartum BZP—a drug that mimics the exact symptoms of severe hallucination and paranoia, but breaks down in the bloodstream within six hours, leaving zero trace in standard toxicology reports. The nanny Eleanor had hired had been slipping it into Clara’s morning tea for the past two weeks.

The file contained a pre-signed, pre-dated certificate of involuntary commitment. According to the document, Clara was scheduled to be picked up by the clinic's private transport drivers the morning after the baby shower. She was to be kept in a medically induced coma for six months while Eleanor filed for full legal custody of Leo.

But the final page was the one that made Arthur drop his laptop.

It was a financial contract between Eleanor Vance and Dr. Sterling. Upon Clara’s successful commitment, Dr. Sterling was to receive a permanent seat on the board of the Vance Group, along with a 10% share of Arthur’s clean energy company.

“She didn't just want to take my baby,” Clara whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of horror and fury. “She was actively poisoning me. She was killing me slowly, Arthur.”

Arthur looked at the contract, his face transforming into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. The last remaining shred of filial loyalty he had for his mother died right there in that dark office.

Suddenly, the red lights in the hallway began to flash. A sharp, piercing alarm began to echo through the clinic.

“The network reboot happened early,” Marcus snapped, grabbing the leather binder from Clara's hands and shoving it into his jacket. “Security override is compromised. We need to move. Now!”
