Chapter 6 - The Poison in the Tea

The battle in the corporate boardroom was won, but the war for Clara’s health was far from over.
Two days after Eleanor’s removal from the company, Clara collapsed in the living room of the penthouse. The months of chronic, systematic poisoning from the BZP hormone had taken a severe toll on her nervous system. She lay in the private wing of the Northwestern Memorial Hospital, pale, weak, but still fiercely clutching a video monitor that showed little Leo sleeping safely under Marcus Vance's personal watch at home.
Arthur sat by her bedside, holding her frail hand, his heart breaking as he watched the monitor screen trace her erratic heart rate.
“The doctors say the toxin is slowly clearing your system, Clara,” Arthur whispered, kissing her knuckles. “But the damage to your adrenal glands will take months to fully heal. You should have told me you were feeling sick weeks ago.”
“I couldn't, Arthur,” Clara said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Every time I told you I felt dizzy, Eleanor would bring in her own specialist who told me it was just 'new mother exhaustion.' They made me believe I was breaking down. If it wasn't for that teddy bear camera… I would be sitting in Sterling's asylum right now, sedated, wondering why my husband forgot about me.”
The door opened quietly, and Marcus Vance stepped in. His usual stoic expression was replaced by a look of deep concern. He held a small, evidence bag containing a silver thermos.
“Clara, Arthur,” Marcus said, pulling up a chair. “Our forensic team just finished analyzing the items seized from your old mansion’s kitchen. We found the exact source of the daily dosage. It wasn't just in the tea leaves. Eleanor had the private estate’s main water filtration system configured to release micro-doses into the master suite's plumbing. She was washing you in the poison, Clara. It absorbed through your skin every time you took a bath.”
Arthur slammed his fist against the wall. “That’s attempted murder! Marcus, tell me the prosecutors can upgrade the charges!”
“They already have,” Marcus said, showing them a digital legal update. “The state attorney has officially upgraded Eleanor’s charges to attempted first-degree murder by poisoning. Her lawyers tried to offer a plea deal this morning—she offers to sign over all remaining family assets to Arthur and Clara in exchange for a suspended sentence in a minimum-security medical retreat.”

Clara sat up, ignoring the sharp pain in her ribs. Her eyes flashed with an absolute, unyielding fire. “No plea deals, Marcus. Tell the prosecutor we want a full, public trial. I want the world to see every single piece of data. I want every wealthy family in this city to know that their money cannot buy their way out of destroying a mother’s life.”
Arthur looked at Clara, his eyes filled with an immense, profound respect. The fragile girl he had married had become a warrior. “You heard her, Marcus. No deals. We go to court.”
