Chapter 5 - The Legal Counter-Attack

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the Vance Corporate Headquarters in downtown Chicago was in a state of complete civil war.

The board of directors had called an emergency closed-door meeting. Eleanor Vance, who had been released on a massive ten-million-dollar cash bail arranged by her elite legal team just hours prior, sat at the head of the long mahogany table. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were still filled with an aggressive, venomous determination. Her lawyers surrounded her like a wall of dark suits.

“This is a temporary public relations setback,” Eleanor hissed, slamming her hand on the table, glaring at the trembling board members. “We issue a statement saying the video was edited out of context. We buy out the local media stations. We file an immediate injunction against Clara for defamation and corporate espionage!”

“I'm afraid you can't do that, Mother,” Arthur’s voice broke through the room as the double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Arthur walked in, flanked by Clara and a team of independent, federal-level prosecutors wearing distinct badges. Clara was dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit, her hair pulled back tightly, looking every bit like the true matriarch of the family future.

Eleanor stood up so fast her chair slid backward. “Arthur! How dare you bring these people into my boardroom! You are my son! You owe everything to this company!”

“This isn't your boardroom anymore, Eleanor,” Clara said, walking up to the opposite end of the table. She unzipped a leather briefcase and tossed a stack of federal warrants onto the glass surface.

“What is this?” Eleanor’s lead attorney snapped, reaching for the papers.

“That is a federal freeze order issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission,” Clara said, her voice calm, commanding, and entirely devoid of fear. “Last night, while you were sitting in your jail cell, Dr. Julian Sterling gave a full confession to the federal prosecutors. He didn't just give up the documents about me. He gave up the financial logs showing that you have been laundering money through his psychiatric institute for over six years to avoid paying corporate taxes.”

The board members immediately began whispering frantically, several of them throwing their hands up in despair.

“You… you little bitch,” Eleanor snarled, her aristocratic mask completely dropping, her face twisted in pure hatred. “You think you can take my company? I built this empire! My father built this empire! You are nothing but a common girl from the streets! You don't have a single share in this company!”

“She doesn't need shares, Mother,” Arthur said, stepping forward, his voice cold as ice. “But I do. I own 45% of the voting shares left to me by Grandfather. And as of five minutes ago, the remaining 10% held by the independent board members has been officially transferred to Clara’s management trust.”

Arthur looked around the room at the board members, who all quickly lowered their heads, refusing to meet Eleanor's desperate gaze.

“The board has just voted, Eleanor,” Arthur announced. “You are officially stripped of your title as Chairperson. You are removed from the board of directors. You have exactly one hour to clear your personal belongings from this building before security escorts you out permanently.”

Eleanor stumbled backward, looking at the board members she had controlled through fear for decades. “You… you can't do this to me! I am Eleanor Vance!”

“No,” Clara said, walking right up to her, looking her dead in the eye. “You are a criminal facing twenty years in a federal prison. Now, get out of my sight.”
