Chapter 4 - The Legal Crucible

By the following afternoon, the aftermath of the night at the suburban house had escalated into a full-scale legal war.
In a private conference room at the district courthouse, Victor sat in an orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to the metal table, his nose covered in heavy white bandages. Sitting beside him was a public defender who looked overwhelmed and terrified.
Across the table sat Samuel Sterling—the top criminal prosecutor in the state, hired personally by the Vale family—alongside Roman and two federal investigators.
"Mr. Vance," Sterling began, opening a thick leather binder on the table. "You are currently charged with first-degree felony assault, unlawful imprisonment, child endangerment, and destruction of private property."
"She's seventeen! She's my stepdaughter!" Victor yelled, his voice nasal through his broken nose. "I have the right to discipline a child in my own home!"
"Elena turned eighteen two weeks ago, Mr. Vance," Sterling corrected smoothly, sliding a certified birth certificate across the table. "Which makes your assault a felony against an adult citizen. Furthermore, my investigators spent the morning reviewing your personal business records."
Victor’s eyes widened with sudden panic. "What records?"
"You run a small logistics contracting firm, correct?" Sterling continued, leaning back in his leather chair. "It seems Vale Enterprises holds forty-five percent of your company's primary commercial leases and eighty percent of your supplier credit lines. As of 8:00 AM this morning, those leases have been terminated for breach of moral conduct clauses, and your lines of credit have been recalled in full."
"You... you can't do that! That bankrupts me!" Victor screamed, slamming his cuffed hands against the table.
"You are already bankrupt, Mr. Vance," Sterling said with a cold smile. "Your house went into foreclosure three hours ago after the mortgage note was purchased and immediately called by Vale Capital. You owe four million dollars in liquidated damages. You will spend the next twelve to fifteen years in a maximum-security state prison."
The public defender leaned over to Victor, whispering frantically. "Take a plea deal, Victor. If this goes to a jury trial with Alexander Vale funding the prosecution, you will die in prison."
Victor collapsed back into his chair, his arrogance completely shattered, staring at the table in helpless, horrifying realization of the giant he had foolishly tried to fight.
Meanwhile, in an anteroom down the hall, Sarah sat alone on a wooden bench, holding a paper cup of cold coffee.
The door opened, and Elena walked in, accompanied by Alexander. Elena wore a simple, elegant dark blue dress, her hair pinned back neatly, her posture erect and confident despite the faint bruises still visible on her neck.
Sarah stood up quickly, taking a step toward her daughter. "Elena! Oh, thank God! My baby—"
"Stop," Elena said quietly.
One word.
Just as she had said to Victor on the night of her attack. But this time, her voice didn't shake. It was firm, cool, and backed by the absolute authority of a woman who knew her worth.
Sarah froze, her hands hovering in the air. "Elena... please. I was scared. Victor was out of his mind... I didn't know what to do!"
"You had eighteen years to protect me, Mom," Elena said, looking her mother directly in the eyes. "When he took his belt off, you looked away. When he threw me into the snow without shoes, you shut the door."
"I was trapped!" Sarah cried out, tears ruining her makeup.
"No, you chose him," Elena corrected softly. "Grandfather offered you help twenty years ago, and you rejected it. I offered you a chance to stand with me last night, and you dropped my coat on the floor."
Elena reached into her purse and pulled out an envelope containing a single plane ticket to Oregon and a modest monthly stipend allowance managed by the Vale legal trust.
"You won't go to prison, Mom," Elena said, setting the envelope on the bench beside her. "Grandfather made sure the charges against you were dropped for my sake. But you will leave this state today. You will never contact me, and you will never ask for a single dollar from the Vale estate again."
"Elena, please don't abandon me!" Sarah begged, reaching for her dress.
May you like
Elena took a step back, stepping beside Alexander, who placed a warm, protective arm around her shoulders.
"Goodbye, Sarah," Elena said softly, turning her back on her mother and walking out into the bright sunlight of the courthouse foyer.
