Chapter 1 - The Arrival of the Vale Legacy

The snow fell faster now, dusting the sleek black hoods of the six luxury sedans lining the narrow, ice-slick street.

Elena fell to her knees on the frozen asphalt, her bare feet completely numb, her body shivering violently beneath her thin sweater. The old man moved with surprising speed despite his age, his dark wool coat billowing behind him as he dropped his silver-topped cane onto the snow and knelt beside her.

"My sweet girl... look at me," Alexander Vale whispered, his voice trembling with an agonizing mixture of heartbreak and fierce, protective rage.

He gently wrapped a heavy, fur-lined cashmere coat around her bruised shoulders, lifting her frail, shivering frame from the freezing ground as if she were made of delicate glass. Two broad-shouldered security officers in black suits instantly flanked them, holding umbrellas over their heads to block the falling snow.

"Grandfather?" Elena choked out, her lips blue, tears freezing on her pale cheeks. "You... you got the letter?"

"I received it two days ago, my darling," Alexander said, holding her tightly against his chest as he carried her toward the warm interior of the lead Maybach. "Your grandmother’s letter was delivered to my estate in Manhattan. I spent forty-eight hours dismantling federal transport registries to track down your location. I am so sorry I was late."

"He... he burned your card," Elena sobbed, hiding her face in the warm lapels of his coat. "He hit me because I said I was going to university."

Alexander’s eyes, a striking, sharp storm-gray, turned toward the modest suburban house at the end of the driveway. The light in the living room window flickered as the front curtain twitched.

Victor stood behind the glass, a glass of bourbon in his hand, watching the convoy of million-dollar vehicles with sudden, uneasy curiosity.

"Dr. Vance," Alexander said calmly to the personal physician waiting inside the heated rear cabin of the car. "Check my granddaughter for fractures, internal bleeding, and severe frostbite immediately."

"Yes, Mr. Vale," the doctor replied, opening a medical kit and carefully examining Elena's swollen shoulder and bleeding feet.

Alexander turned to his chief of security, a tall, battle-hardened man named Roman, who stood by the open car door.

"Roman," Alexander commanded, his voice dropping into a register so dark and absolute it seemed to chill the air around them. "The man inside that house laid hands on the sole heiress of Vale Enterprises. Secure the perimeter. No one leaves that house tonight. Cut the power, cut the phone lines, and notify the local police chief that Alexander Vale is taking personal jurisdiction over this estate."

"Understood, Mr. Vale," Roman replied, drawing a radio from his tactical belt. "And the mother?"

Alexander looked down at Elena, who was weeping quietly as the doctor wrapped warm sterile bandages around her toes.

"My daughter abandoned her blood to protect a monster," Alexander said coldly. "She will answer for her cowardice in due time. Execute lockdown."
