Chapter 3 - The Reconstruction of Elena

Fifty miles away, in the private medical wing of the penthouse suite at the Vale Estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, Elena rested in a plush canopy bed.

The room was filled with warm lamplight, the soothing crackle of a private fireplace, and the faint scent of fresh lavender. A team of private nurses had dressed her injuries, applied cooling salve to her bruises, and wrapped her feet in soft silk bandages.

Beside her bed sat a velvet tray holding warm broth, fresh fruit, and the acceptance letter to Harrington University—wrinkled and slightly creased, but safe.

The heavy oak doors opened softly, and Alexander stepped inside, carrying a small, worn velvet box in his hand.

"How are you feeling, my child?" he asked, sitting gently on the edge of the mattress.

Elena adjusted herself, sitting up against the soft pillows. "I... I still feel like I'm dreaming. Yesterday I was scrubbing the floors so Victor wouldn't hit me, and tonight..." She looked around the breathtaking room, tears welling in her eyes again. "Why did my mother hide you from me?"

Alexander let out a deep, sorrowful sigh, looking down at his hands. "Your mother blamed me for your father's death. When your father passed away from illness, Sarah chose to cut all ties with the Vale family, believing our wealth was a curse. She ran away, took you with her, and married that wretched, abusive coward to punish herself—and in doing so, she allowed him to punish you."

He opened the velvet box in his hand. Inside was a heavy gold signet ring engraved with a soaring falcon—the ancient symbol of the Vale family.

"Your father was meant to inherit my company, Elena," Alexander said, placing the box in her hand. "He was a good man. Kind, brilliant, and brave. And looking at you tonight—seeing you stand up to that monster to defend your education—I see your father's spirit alive in you."

Elena traced the edge of the gold ring with her thumb. "Victor destroyed my laptop... all my high school transcripts were saved on it. If I can't submit my enrollment forms by Friday, Harrington University will give my scholarship to someone else."

Alexander smiled softly—a genuine, warm expression that erased decades of cold authority from his face.

"My dear girl," Alexander said smoothly. "Harrington University’s engineering building bears our family name. The Dean of Admissions is waiting in the library downstairs right now with your official orientation folder."

Elena gasped, her mouth opening in shock. "What?"

"You earned that scholarship through your own intelligence, Elena," Alexander assured her, taking her small hand in his. "I am simply making sure no small-minded tyrant ever stands between you and your dreams again."
