Chapter 6 - The King's Retribution

The storm raged violently over an abandoned airfield near the New Jersey border. A private corporate jet sat on the tarmac, its engines whining as they spooled up for takeoff.
Inside a sleek black sedan parked near the hangar, Carlo Ricci was frantically typing codes into a encrypted laptop, transferring millions from hijacked Moretti accounts into offshore holding companies in the Caymans. Beside him sat Don Victor Sabatini, smoking a thick cigar, looking thoroughly pleased with himself.
"We did it, Carlo," Sabatini chuckled, puffing smoke into the air. "The Moretti empire is dead. By tomorrow morning, every captain in New York will bow to us."
"Just hurry up with the pilot," Carlo said nervously, sweating through his expensive collar. "Alessandro isn't dead until I see his corpse. You don't know him like I do. He’s a devil."
"Relax," Sabatini laughed. "He’s cornered at his estate, fighting off my men. He has nowhere to—"
The windshield of the sedan suddenly exploded inward.
A heavy steel ram mounted on the front of a custom armored truck slammed into the side of the sedan, flipping the luxury car onto its roof with a deafening crunch of tearing metal.
Glass rained down everywhere. The sedan skidded fifty yards across the slick tarmac, coming to a halt near the wheels of the private jet.
Coughing blood, his shoulder dislocated, Sabatini kicked open his crushed door and dragged himself out onto the wet asphalt. Carlo scrambled out from the other side, his face covered in cuts, clutching his laptop like a lifesaver.
Through the rain and fog, a single figure walked slowly toward them.
Alessandro Moretti moved with absolute, terrifying calm. In his right hand, he held a dark steel shotgun. In his left, he held his father’s silver watch.
Sabatini pulled a revolver from his belt with a trembling hand, firing two wild shots through the rain. Alessandro didn't even flinch. He raised the shotgun and fired once.
The heavy load tore through Sabatini’s knee. The rival Don screamed, collapsing onto his face in the puddles, dropping his gun into the water.
Carlo backed away toward the jet, terrified, holding his hands up. "Alessandro! Wait! Please! It was Sabatini! He forced me! He threatened my family!"
Alessandro stopped five feet from Carlo. The rain washed the dirt from his face, highlighting the harsh, razor-sharp lines of his jaw.
"You don't have a family, Carlo," Alessandro said softly. "You traded them for thirty percent of a kingdom that was never yours."
"I served your father!" Carlo begged, weeping on his knees in the rain. "I brought you coffee when he died! I stood by you!"
"And you sold my life for silver," Alessandro replied.
He didn't raise the gun. Instead, he pulled the trigger of his shotgun, blasting the laptop in Carlo’s hands to pieces, destroying the digital keys forever.
Carlo shrieked as the plastic exploded, falling backward into the rain.
Alessandro reached down, grabbing Carlo by his expensive collar, dragging him toward Sabatini. He tossed Carlo onto the wet pavement beside his co-conspirator.
"The police are ten minutes behind me," Alessandro said, standing over both men like a judge delivering an absolute verdict. "Federal agents. They have the encrypted ledgers I sent from my estate. You're going to spend the rest of your miserable lives in a maximum-security cell, watching me rebuild everything you tried to destroy."
Marco arrived with two armored vehicles, securing the airfield as federal sirens wailed in the distance.
Alessandro turned his back on the ruined men, stepping into his car as the rain washed the blood from the tarmac.
Six Months Later
The morning sun beat down brightly on the manicured gardens of a stunning villa overlooking Lake Como, Italy. White roses bloomed along the stone terraces, and the calm blue water stretched as far as the eye could see.
There were no armed guards in tactical gear visible here. No bulletproof glass. Only the quiet rustle of olive trees in the warm breeze.
On the grand patio, a small girl in a bright yellow sundress was happily chasing a fluffy white kitten across the marble tiles. Her joyful laughter bounced off the stone walls.
"Maya, don't run too fast! You'll fall!" Elena called out from a sun lounger.
She looked breathtaking. The tired lines on her face were gone, replaced by a radiant health and peace. She wore a simple linen dress, her hair pinned back, looking every bit like the mistress of the estate rather than a housekeeper.
A pair of strong arms wrapped around her shoulders from behind.
Alessandro leaned down, resting his cheek against hers. He wore a crisp white shirt, his gray eyes soft as he watched Maya play.
"She has too much energy," Alessandro murmured, a faint smile gracing his lips. "She takes after her mother."
Elena turned her head, pressing a sweet, lingering kiss to his lips. "She takes after her 'Bear'."
Alessandro let out a quiet laugh—a sound that was once alien to him, but now came easily every single day. After the fall of Sabatini and the purge of the traitors, Alessandro had restructured the Moretti organization, stepping back from the shadows of violence and transitioning their operations into legitimate international commerce. He had left New York behind to build a real home—not a fortress—for the people he loved.
Maya came running over, her small bare feet slapping against the warm tiles. She skidded to a halt in front of Alessandro, reaching up her arms.
"Up, Bear! Up!" she demanded with adorable authority.
Alessandro scooped her up into his arms effortlessly, tossing her gently into the air before pulling her tight against his chest. Maya giggled wildly, placing her small hand flat over his heart—just like she had done under the oak tree a year ago.
Beneath her small palm, tucked inside his shirt pocket, was his father’s silver watch.

Alessandro reached down, holding Elena’s hand in his, while resting his chin on Maya’s brown curls. The watch inside his pocket ticked steadily, softly, marking time.
It was no longer a countdown. It was the rhythm of a life reborn.
