Chapter 2 - The Shadow in the Staff Quarters

Night fell over the Hudson Valley like a shroud of black velvet. A cold wind blew off the river, rustling the thick woods surrounding the Moretti estate.

Inside the small apartment above the garage, the room was dimly lit by a single bedside lamp. Elena sat on the edge of the bed, watching Maya sleep. The little girl had one arm wrapped around a worn teddy bear, her breath steady and sweet.

Elena’s hands were shaking as she poured water into a glass. She took a sip, trying to calm the storm in her chest. Seeing Maya on top of Alessandro Moretti had almost stopped her heart. She knew who he was. Every person in the tri-state area knew the name Alessandro Moretti—the ruthless king of the underworld who ruled with an iron fist and an unyielding code.

Suddenly, her cheap burner phone vibrated against the wooden nightstand.

The buzzing felt like an electric shock. Elena snatched it up, her knuckles turning white. She glanced at the sleeping child before stepping into the small bathroom, locking the door behind her.

She pressed the phone to her ear. She didn't speak.

"He was soft with the kid," a harsh, rasping voice came through the receiver. "I saw the report. You’re doing well, Elena."

"Leave us alone," Elena whispered, her voice fierce with quiet desperation. "I did what you asked. I got the job. I scrubbed the floors, I kept my mouth shut. Don't drag Maya into this!"

"You don't get to make demands!" the voice snapped back. "You owe five hundred thousand dollars for your dead husband’s gambling debts to the Sabatini syndicate. You think we won't throw you and that little bastard into the river?"

Tears burned Elena’s eyes. Her husband hadn't died in an industrial accident; he had been murdered by his loan sharks, leaving her with a mountain of blood debt she could never pay. The Sabatinis—the rival faction seeking to tear down Alessandro’s empire—had offered her a choice: work inside the Moretti estate as their spy, or lose her daughter.

"What do you want?" Elena choked out.

"The shipment arriving at the Brooklyn docks tonight isn't silk, and you know it. Carlo Ricci left a set of encrypted ledger codes in the master study safe. Get them. We need the location of Moretti’s secondary weapons depot by midnight."

Elena pressed her hand over her mouth to muffle a sob. "I can't get into his study! It’s guarded! If Alessandro catches me—"

"If Alessandro catches you, he kills you," the voice interrupted coldly. "If you fail us, we kill the girl. You have two hours."

The line went dead.

Elena sank to the tiled floor, pulling her knees to her chest. She was trapped between two monsters: the lethal mob boss who had shown her daughter unexpected gentleness, and the cruel syndicate holding a gun to her child's head.

Outside her window, high up in the main house, a shadow moved past the second-floor library.

Alessandro was standing by the window, a glass of scotch untouched in his hand. Down in the courtyard, Marco was conducting a sweep with two armed men. Everything looked peaceful, but the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a blade.

A soft knock came at the library door.

"Enter," Alessandro said without turning around.

Carlo Ricci walked in, carrying a leather briefcase. His silver hair was neatly combed, his tailored suit immaculate despite the late hour. "The convoy for the docks is ready, Alessandro. Marco is waiting in the lead SUV."

Alessandro turned around slowly, his gray eyes fixing on his old advisor. "You verified the security routing yourself, Carlo?"

"Of course," Carlo replied smoothly, offering a confident smile. "Every route has been cleared through our police contacts. The Sabatinis have no idea we’re moving the cargo tonight."

"Good," Alessandro said softly. He set his glass down on the desk. "Carlo... how long have you worked for my family?"

Carlo seemed surprised by the question. "Fifteen years, Boss. Since your father was alive."

"Fifteen years," Alessandro repeated. He walked over, placing a heavy hand on Carlo’s shoulder. "My father trusted you. I trusted you. Remember that."

Carlo’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before recovering. "My loyalty has always been to the Moretti name, Alessandro."

"Let's go then," Alessandro said, walking past him toward the door. "Let's see if Brooklyn is as quiet as you promise."
