Chapter 4 - The Betrayal at Home

Alessandro’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles turned ghostly white. "Where are you, Elena?"

"I’m in the main library... under the desk," she whimpered, holding her phone tightly. "Carlo’s men... they bypassed the security codes! They knew every entry point! They killed the gate guards!"

Marco glanced in the rearview mirror, his face pale. "The estate is compromised, Boss. Carlo had the master security bypass keys."

"Elena," Alessandro said, his tone dropping into a low, commanding frequency that cut straight through her panic. "Listen to me very carefully. Where is Maya?"

"She’s... she’s with me," Elena choked out. "I brought her when I tried to run, but they surrounded the garage. Mr. Moretti, please... they’re looking for your safe. They said if they don't find the secondary codes, they're going to burn the house down with us inside!"

Alessandro locked eyes with Marco in the mirror. "Drive faster," he ordered. Then he returned to the phone. "Elena, behind the bookcase on the left side of the library, there is a brass lion head. Pull the jaw down."

A pause on the line, followed by the sound of shuffling paper and frantic breathing. "I... I found it!"

"It leads to a panic room built into the foundations," Alessandro instructed calmly. "Get inside. Lock the steel latch from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Marco. Do you understand?"

"They’re coming down the hall!" Elena gasped. "I hear their footsteps!"

"Run, Elena!" Alessandro commanded.

On the other end of the line, the sound of a heavy oak door being kicked open echoed clearly. Men were shouting in Italian, heavy boots stomping across the hardwood floor.

"In here! Check the desk!" a brutal voice yelled.

Elena scrambled behind the heavy bookcase, her hands slippery with cold sweat. She pulled down on the brass lion’s jaw. With a quiet hiss of hydraulic pressure, a section of the dark wood paneling slid back, revealing a narrow dark passageway.

She scooped up Maya, who was wide awake now, her large amber eyes filled with silent terror.

"Mommy... who are those loud men?" Maya whispered softly.

"Shh, baby... quiet as a mouse," Elena whispered, stepping into the dark passage.

Before she could pull the heavy steel manual lever to close the hidden door from the inside, a hand grabbed her by the hair, yanking her backward out into the library.

Elena screamed, falling onto the rug, shielding Maya with her body.

A tall, heavily tattooed mercenary stood over her, a silenced pistol raised. Beside him stood a junior Sabatini lieutenant named Franco.

"Well, well," Franco sneered, looking down at the terrified maid and her child. "What do we have here? A rat hiding in the wall?"

Franco grabbed Maya by her arm, ripping her away from Elena.

"No! Leave her alone! Take me!" Elena shrieked, clawing at Franco's legs, but the other mercenary kicked her hard in the ribs, sending her sprawling across the floor.

Maya began to cry hysterically, kicking her tiny legs. "Mommy! Mommy!"

Franco lifted the screaming girl by her collar, pointing his gun toward her head. "Shut the kid up, or I’ll do it for you! Where is Moretti’s primary ledger?!"

"I don't know! I’m just a maid!" Elena cried, blood trickling from the corner of her lip. "Please! She’s just a baby!"

Suddenly, the heavy glass windows of the library shattered inward in a rain of deadly shards.
