Chapter 3 - Ambush at the Waterfront

The Brooklyn waterfront was a desolate wasteland of rusting shipping containers and rotting wooden piers. Rain began to fall, turning the asphalt into a slick, mirror-like surface that reflected the amber glow of the industrial streetlights.

A convoy of three black armored SUVs pulled to a stop inside Warehouse 14.

Alessandro stepped out of the middle vehicle, buttoning his long coat against the biting wind. Marco fell in beside him, his submachine gun held low at his side. Ten heavily armed Moretti soldiers immediately took up defensive positions along the perimeter of the warehouse.

In the center of the vast space stood four massive wooden crates.

"Check the manifests," Alessandro ordered.

Two men stepped forward with crowbars, prying open the first crate. Inside sat row upon row of high-grade tactical military equipment—supplies meant to secure the Moretti family's control over the Eastern Seaboard for the next decade.

"Everything is accounted for," Marco reported, scanning the dark rafters above. "It’s too quiet, Alessandro. I don't like it."

"Neither do I," Alessandro murmured.

Before Marco could order a retreat, the massive steel doors of the warehouse slammed shut with a deafening crash. Heavy automated locks engaged, sealing them inside.

Instantly, floodlights mounted high on the catwalks burst to life, blinding the Moretti men.

"Ambush!" Marco roared, shoving Alessandro behind a concrete pillar just as heavy automatic gunfire erupted from the upper gantries.

Sparks flew wildly as bullets chewed through the concrete and steel. Two Moretti guards dropped instantly. Marco returned fire, his bursts controlled and precise, taking down a shooter in the rafters, but the muzzle flashes revealed dozens of armed mercenaries surrounding them from above.

From the safety of an upper glass control room, a figure stepped down onto the iron stairs.

It was Don Victor Sabatini, flanked by six heavily armed men. Beside him stood a man wearing an expensive coat, holding an encrypted radio.

Alessandro peeked around the pillar, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure fury as he recognized the man standing beside Sabatini.

"Carlo," Alessandro hissed under his breath.

"Well, well, Alessandro!" Victor Sabatini’s voice echoed over the warehouse loudspeaker, laced with malicious triumph. "Look at the great Moretti king, cornered like a rat in his own trap!"

Marco cursed, reloading his weapon. "Carlo betrayed us? That bastard... he set up the routing!"

"He didn't just set up the routing," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly calm amid the deafening gunfire. "He’s been selling us out for months. Every raid, every lost shipment... it was him."

Above them, Carlo stepped up to the railing, looking down at Alessandro with a mixture of cold arrogance and pity. "Don't take it personally, Alessandro," Carlo called down. "Your father was a visioner. You... you’re too rigid. You don't adapt. The Sabatinis offered me thirty percent of the empire. You offered me a salary."

"You sold your honor for silver, Carlo!" Marco screamed, firing a burst up at the catwalk, forcing Carlo to duck behind steel plating.

"I sold a dying kingdom!" Carlo shouted back. "Kill them all! Leave no one alive!"

A hail of bullets poured down on their position. The concrete pillar began to disintegrate under the intense barrage. Alessandro drew his Sig Sauer, dropping two mercenaries who tried to flank their position from the left.

"Boss, we can't hold this position!" Marco yelled, blood trickling down his forehead from a shrapnel cut. "The back exit is welded shut!"

Alessandro reached into his jacket, pulling out a heavy detonator switch. He had lived through enough wars to know that trust was a luxury he couldn't afford—even with his own inner circle.

"You think I brought five million dollars worth of cargo without a backup plan, Carlo?" Alessandro muttered.

He pressed the red button on the detonator.

A secondary series of charges planted along the warehouse's eastern wall detonated with a blinding flash and a roar that shook the bay. The brick structure collapsed outward, creating a gaping hole straight to the docks.

"Move!" Alessandro barked, laying down cover fire as Marco and the three surviving guards scrambled through the smoke and dust toward the waiting SUV outside.

Bullets chewed up the ground around them as they dove into the vehicle. Marco slammed the SUV into reverse, smashing through a wooden gate and barreling into the rainy night just as Sabatini's men rushed out of the burning warehouse firing wildly.

Inside the bouncing SUV, Alessandro wiped a streak of blood from his cheek. His phone rang.

It was an unlisted number from the estate.

Alessandro picked it up. "Speak."

A frantic, terrified voice came through the speaker—not a guard, but Elena Vance.

"Mr. Moretti!" she sobbed, rain and wind howling in her background. "They’re here! Sabatini's men... they’re inside the house! They’re looking for you!"
