Chapter 5 - The Judgment Day

The county courtroom was packed with reporters, local socialites, and curious onlookers. The scandal had captured the entire city's attention—the classic tale of an arrogant wealthy family brought low by the very woman they had dismissed as "worthless."

I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit. My posture was straight, my eyes calm.

Carter sat at the defense table, looking like a hollow shell of his former self. His expensive suit hung loosely on his frame, his face pale and sunken. Next to him, Beatrice sat slumped in her chair, her head lowered, unable to face the cameras flashing from the media section.

The judge cleared his throat, banging his gavel to bring the room to order.

"We are here for the preliminary hearing of the State versus Carter Mercer and Beatrice Mercer," the judge announced. "The prosecution has submitted an extraordinary amount of forensic financial data, alongside verified audio recordings and digital evidence."

Carter’s lawyer stood up, his voice lacking any real confidence. "Your Honor, my client maintains his innocence. The financial irregularities were the result of poor management, and the incident at the hospital was simply an emotional family misunderstanding—"

"Your Honor, if I may," the District Attorney interrupted, standing up with a thick manila folder. "The state has just accepted a formal plea agreement from co-defendant Amber Hayes. Miss Hayes has turned over three years of encrypted chat logs, text messages, and recorded phone calls from Mr. Carter Mercer."

The DA opened the folder, reading directly into the microphone.

"In a text message dated three weeks ago, Mr. Mercer explicitly states to Miss Hayes: 'Don't worry about the money. Once I finalize the transfer of Evelyn's trust fund into our offshore account, she won't be able to do anything. She's too weak to fight back. She'll accept whatever I give her.'"

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom.

Carter buried his face in his hands. Beatrice let out a soft, pathetic groan, leaning against the table.

"Furthermore," the DA continued, looking directly at Carter with absolute disdain. "We have verified that Mr. Mercer systematically falsified medical documents to convince his wife she was infertile, using a corrupt private clinic, in order to destroy her self-esteem and keep her compliant while he drained her inheritance."

The revelation hit me like a physical blow. The courtroom erupted into chaos.

I stared at Carter, my breath catching in my throat. He had lied about my fertility. For five years, I had wept in secret, believing my body was broken, enduring his mother’s cruel torments—and it had all been a calculated, monstrous lie to keep me broken.

The judge banged his gavel repeatedly, his face red with anger. "Silence! Silence in the court!"

When the room finally quieted, the judge looked down at Carter with pure revulsion. "Mr. Mercer, the depth of your depravity is truly shocking. This court finds more than enough evidence to proceed to a full criminal trial. Bail is officially denied. You and your mother will remain in state custody until sentencing."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to click the handcuffs around Carter’s wrists, he turned to look at me, his eyes full of pathetic, desperate begging.

"Evelyn, please! I'm sorry! I did it for us!" he screamed as they dragged him away.

I didn't say a word. I simply watched him go, the final remnants of his power crumbling into dust.
